Guest ON3GO
L24 cars? theres a 1974 260z widebody with triple webber carbs, msd, all the bolt ons, custom suspension, etc... it says 300hp. so i was wondering whats the most you can get out of the a Z car like that without breaking into the motor. also whats the most HP somebody has gotten out of this type of setup. im looking to buy something this week so its either this car or a 240sx with a SR20DET swap. Thanks Mike
Oltmann
A "bolt-ons" L24 without engine work or power adders typically doesn't make more than 150hp and the flywheel. Anyone who would claim 300hp is either an incredible liar, or there is alot more to the car than bolt-ons.
Mudge
Remember the NA guys with 13.5:1 etc are making 300HP or so at the crank, if you want power go turbo or get a V8. I assume you mean bottom end when you mean "breaking into the motor", if all you did was top end work you'd be limited on RPM and probably would not see more than 220 HP at the crank is my guess, and it would not be a torque monster like a turbo car, and it wont get gas mileage for crap from what I've seen of tripples. I dont think I've heard of more than 13 MPG. 240sx sounds like it would be a nice car.
Lockjaw
I got 20 or so with mine when I had a 2.8 liter with a cam and header. You can get decent mileage, not quite as good as with SU's, but you can do it. I had a friend that used mine and he ran 8.40's in the 1/8th mile in a 240Z. It had a big cam, header, light fllywheel and 3 inch exhaust. The bottom end was a stock 2.8 liter flat top motor, and the head was a seriously milled P79. We had a vericom computer on it and it said it made 240hp, but it was not easy to drive in town. To me, nothing sounds sweeter then an inline 6 nissan engine with side drafts and a cam going thru the gears. Not my choice for power output, but they sound awesome. Also, I always found the difference in going up in engine size to be pretty decent power wise. A 2.8 is way better then a 2.6 or 2.4 if you ask me. Maybe not so much if you are turbocharged, but NA, you need the Cubes.
