Tim240z
Curious as to the general nature of the area: Climate, Economy, Population type (low, middle upper class) or just some general intrinsic details.... Thanks, Tim
Guest John Adkins
Hi Tim, I can tell you a little about Klamath Falls; I went to college there (OIT) and grew up in a small town not far from there. Klamath Falls is a pretty nice town. The economy in area based on three things: farming, the college and services for the students, and Kingsley Field, the air force base. There's also still some timber industry, but not as much as there used to be. There's a plywood plant and a plant that makes wooden doors. Another big employer for the college kid is Sykes, which provides phone tech support for some big software companies. The air base used to be much more active in the '70s, but now it's used by the Air Guard and there's just a skeleton crew that maintain the place. Big farm crops in the area are potatoes, alfalfa, and wheat. My brother-in-law just bought a newly built 4 bedroom three car garage house for about $ 180,000;He just graduated from OIT and got a job at Kingsley field as a sys admin. The college is an engineering school. Last time I was back in K.F. to visit the relatives, it seemed that there had been a lot of people who had migrated up there from California, so it has become a lot more diverse than it used to be. There are still a lot of rednecks, but a lot of just decent folks as well. There's a big population of senior citizens and retirees from the military. No smog check laws there. Lots of hunting and fishing opportunities in the area. It snows there in the winter, enough to have to use snow tires and chains. I'd like to move back someday, because I'm getting tired of the overpriced Bay Area , but there's not much employment in my line of work there (notes/web/java development). Mudge
No smog checks? Cool. You do NOT fill up your own tank in OR, there is one other state with a similar law. Kind of wierd for me pulling up to a full service station! I visited Eugene so I dont know about Klamath, Eugene is cold, rains alot, and is the hippy town of OR, and doggon housing is dirt cheap! Guest John Adkins
Klamath Falls is down near the California/Oregon border. Interestingly, it's a pretty conservative for being a college town, compared to Ashland or Eugene. It's rather dry in K.F. compared to Portland or Eugene. I lived up in Portland for a while and it seemed to rain non-stop from October to May. Another nice thing about Oregon is that car registration is pretty cheap. When I last registered one of my cars in Oregon in 1995 it was about $32 for two years. California is usually around $100 (or higher depending on the age/value of the car) for ONE YEAR. There's also no sales tax. Man, this is making me homesick for Oregon
Mudge
I know at least one person that moved up there not too long ago, couple others that moved to Eugene about 2 1/2 years ago, and several others that fled to AZ. Seems tempting to move out of state, been thinking about it for a few years and OR was definately a consideration, and less drastic than moving to Mexico which the woman suggested, Sonora MX a couple hundred clicks south of Tuscon AZ. Guest Anonymous
I'm living in ashland now and its only a few miles form K Falls. I'm a city guy and for me everything down here sucks . Just not enough to do really and it drives me crazy. Ive been there a few times and the drive form Ashland to K Falls is really nice, about an hour or so thru some really nice turns in a sort of mountain back road. Some people really like it down here so if your into the out doorsy stuff and the more secluded set-up then I guess it isnt all that bad. Dan Juday
Property taxes are double that of CA. But since property values are 1/3 that of CA it's wash. (ignore the bad math, take my word for it) K. Falls is a nice town. One I would consider if I ever had to leave Rio Vista. Finding gainful employment is the trick. Actually, Rio Vista is a lot like a small town in Oregon, only better weather. Wagz
Yup. Property taxes are somewhat higher here in Oregon, but there is no sales tax, no smog check outside the Portland Metro area and Lang County. Housing is definately cheaper than Cali. This is the only state other than New Jersey where you can't pump your own gas. It is definitely more rural in southern Oregon so, the only cities of any size are SF to the south and Portland to the north. But, if you are into getting away from the crowds and traffic, the standard of living is good.
Mudge
My friends that moved up there (Eugene) were renting a 2 bedroom house, for $270 a month, that was about 2.5 years ago.
