Guest m35514h
I have a holley 600cfm with vacuum secondaries, and its really boggy at lights, and a passerby told me that it looked as if i were running rich(black smoke) plus it smells like a gas station in the car. If i were running too rich could that affect my idle? If i put it in neutral my idle is ok, and i just have to go really slow on the gas to get it to run normally. I would appreciate any help. Mike C
You need to set the idle mixture screws as well as the idle speed. A bog is usually from the sudden introduction of air and not enough fuel at the same time. Do a Google search for adjusting Holleys and you should be rewarded with hours of reading material. Guest Anonymous
First of all I say you got a lot of nerve driving it like that. I hope you got insurance for fire! Secondly, as usual it could be several things. The passerby's comment is a dead giveaway..... "Sticking Float" in carb. Quick fix.....bang on it gently with a pair of pliers etc. (just kind of let the tool fall on it) where the gas line enters the carb. If it clears up in a few seconds then you are justified in assuming dirt in there and gas tank, filter and carb are all going to deal you problems until cleared out. Also,....an old carb will wear out at the float pivot and some will bind. This also will sometimes respond to the pliers. While it's idling, lift he hood and eyeball the carburetor to see if gas is leaking out of it anywhere (that would be caused by a stuck open float valve). Then the fuel pump for the same (that would be a ruptured pump diaphram), and then the gas "Flex line for the same. And in general a gas leak of any sort anywhere along all the gas line wherever it goes. You will find any by then. You are losing a lot of gasoline, but not much if any to the inside of the engine or you would not idle worth a damn if at all. However, I think your idle must be lousy because from what you say about starting out, the engine is loading up with gas at idle inside and when you open the throttle you are having to wait while it clears this mess out so it can get going. #2: Buy tools, get book, be happy!.....LOL

I had the same problem with my brand new holley 600... adjusted that thing till mt head blew up. Then I got a edelbrock 600 and threw it on and it runs like a raped ape.
