Colors That Make Things Look Larger Than They Are ?

I`m looking to paint a rear spoiler and want it to show larger than it actually is.

I know colors play tricks on our sight, making things look longer, shorter, etc.

Any suggestions ?

Any bright colors make objects look larger than they are, ie white, bright red, bright blue, anything that isnt dark enough to define size. Think about it like this. When you wear a white tshirt, you look larger than when you wear a black t shirt. Im thinking this is because the light reflects off a bright surface and produces somewhat of a glowing effect, making an object look larger. Just my thoughts.

I think it may be just the reverse, Dan. I think bright, primary colors make things look smaller. Think of how a red or fly yellow Z looks next to a dark brown one. The brighter it is, the more "toy-like" it seems.

 

Of course, when you're talking about just parts of a car instead of the whole vehicle, maybe you should fall back to old standards. If you want to make it look wider, paint it in horizontal stripes.

Nope! David K is right on the money on that one: the lighter color makes the object appear larger. White is the best color to paint a spoiler in that case. Flat black was always used to make spoilers and air dams 'disappear.' My $.02.
