tjcannon
If I'm going to the junkyard to pick up a transmission, what parts should I make sure to pick up? The car it's going in is a 1988 300ZX Turbo Automatic, but I don't know what I need to get as far as shifter cables and whatnot. Also, anything else that needs to come off that engine (1982 Firebird) to make the transmission work with my 1979 Chevy 350. I don't have any experience with automatic tranny's, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
David K
I think you need the kickdown cable for sure. Ihad an IROC, what a horrible experience.
Guest tx84ae
What is the purpose of the kickdown cableand where does it connect to the transmission/engine?
Tim240z
Watch out for those older 700 R4s, they are weak and frought with problems. Do a web search to pick the best years to get. The kickdown cable connects to the carb or TB linkage to 'tell' the transmission when to shift to a lower gear, or 'kick down' Tim
Guest cowboy6280
The cable is a "TV" cable and it controls everything on the 700R4 trans... its a great trans but the cable has to be set correctly or you will be very unhappy with it. I learned this the hard way with my '65 chevy pickup. Two very good sites... Bowtie Overdrives, I think the site is 700R4.com and Raptor 700R4, I think their site is transmissioncenter.net The Bowtie Overdrives site is excellent, can explain the details much better than I can here. You will also need an adapter bracket for the carb along with the cable. And, you will also need a lockup kit. hope this helps

Just buy the tv cable and wait on the adapter if you dont think you can handle it go ahead and get the adapter. But in any case waiting can save you some money. Guest cowboy6280
True, you can make your own adapter if you are handy with that sort of thing. But be careful, you need to make sure you have the geometry correct. And thats only if you are running a carb. If not then of course the carb linkage adapter doesnt come into play. If the junk yard is not going to charge you extra for every little item I would go ahead and take what you can... the dipstick & tube, tv cable, lockup harness connector (you can make your own harness, its rather simple), just in case - always good to have something for reference. tjcannon
Thank you all! This thread has multiplied my current knowledge of what I should get by a LOT. I'll let y'all know how it goes once everything is in the car and running.
