Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
I am picking up my first Z soon (a 1970 240Z) as any of you know who have read my other posts, and I have decided (at least for now) that I am going to try to create the "fastest" N/A L6 Z. I already have plans for crafting my own intake manifold and fuel system, but I need to learn some more about the heads. I see that the heads are not cross flow (which will be a challenging factor) but I have seen mentions on other threads about possible swapping of newer heads. I am up to any challenge, so if you know of anything that might work, let me know and I will investigate from there. Are there any cross-flow SOHC heads in later model Z's? Any cross-flow DOHC with same number of teeth on the cam pulleys as the early SOHC?
CU Zcar
There aren't any crossflow or DOHC heads for the L6 motor, at least not currently. You probably saw this thread: http://www.hybridz.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=20564 Seems like trying to find that "magical" DOHC head that will bolt onto the stock L6 bottom end is a hot topic lately (or is it just cause I'm checking the forum more often during summer? ). If you want to be the fastest N/A Zcar, and I assume you mean 1/4 times, I can think of one in the 11's (or 12's? can't remember) running dual SU carbs...a guy named Norm, dunno if he's the "Norm" on this forum but I remember back on Zcar.com it was part of his screenname beating that N/A is a tall order but clearly building a wickedly fast Z is not impossible. BTW I'd be interested to know how much faster people have gotten N/A. That way I can feel bad when I'm turbo and several seconds behind still, hehe. Guest Anonymous
there was a DOHC head made for the 240z but it is (1) JDM only and (2) VERY rare. it came from datsun on the much fabled Fairlady 432 police cruiser and race car. HOWEVER, if memory serves me correct, this was a 2 litre motor (not 2.4) so it may not bolt up to the L28 block. I dont think it was even a crossflow head either. anyhow the 432 was 4 valvle 3 carb (solex!) and 2 cam all from the factory in Japan only. i wish you all the luck/support/deep pockets necessary to accomplish your goal...i love fast N/a z cars most of all. i know someone with an EXTREMELY fast 240z N/A setup for road racing and amount of money in his motor is mind boggling for a Datsun, but its one hell of a ride. CU Zcar
I think it was pointed out that the 432 head won't bolt onto an L-series motor. In fact I think that was an S20 engine. http://zhome.com/History/432Z.htm There was an aftermarket DOHC head made for L-series (OS Giken) but they're out of production and never coming back, according to people who have tried to talk to the company. There is an off chance you could find a used one but I'd think they're worth their weight in gold, and you'd probably have to find it in Japan. (?) In that thread I linked to above, it was found that the RB20 cylinder head has the same cylinder spacing (it was pictured with an L6 head gasket lining up), you'd have to get oil and water to it and find a different crank timing belt gear but turbobluestreak is already working on that one
turbobluestreak
Well as for the RB head tomorrow is the big day I'm going to the junk yard to see if the VG30 oil pump can be made to work on our L6 blocks if so then I'll be fabercating a new front engine cover as well as a timing cover. This will allow me to convert to belt, and then if it all works like I hope I'll be in the market for a RB20 or a RB25. Which ever one I can find. Wish me luck. tbs

Guest Nic-Rebel450CA
i wish you all the luck/support/deep pockets necessary to accomplish your goal... My goal is actually going to be to conserve costs. I have good experience with making inexpensive N/A engines (I'll bring a time-slip from my truck when I hit the 1/4 ) I actually have a couple heads in mind that I am going to check out. I'll let y'all know what I find out! BTW Picking up my Z monday!!!
