It appears that you have no direction here and are grasping at ideas. Please use the search function first. When you have exhausted that avenue, then ask some specifics. I don't want a v8,because of weight consurns. I really don't want to do to much as far as custom goes. I can do just about anything,as long as I have instructions on doing it. If you go with an LS1 you wont have to worry about weight...in fact with the LS1 in a 280Z(Phantom's car! ) It actually weights a little bit less than stock! Now if you want to run 10's/11's you could supercharge the LS1 and get some decent size tires in the rear and it would probably put you in the 10's for sure!!! I think that would be very streetable. But again your talking some serious money here. Also there arent step-by-step directions for everything with this swap but there is a "swap manual" made by JTR(Jaguars That Run) Use the search function and you will know what I am talking about. BUT, to get into the tens you will likely spend close to 20 grand on the swap and to keep from turning your car into a twisted pile of metal once that 400+ hp hits the ground... If you have the money, do whatever you think is the coolest, i guess that is all it comes down to really, do you like superchargers or turbochargers? big blocks, small blocks, inlines, rotary, 4 banger? if you think you can do something, you can definately give it a whirl. a lot of swaps though you'll have no guidance, the SBC would be by far the most documented, and the RB for the inline family... -Zach Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Personally, I wouldn't do an RB. The only one of the series worth messing with is the RB26DETT, but that is not going to fit in the Z31 without a lot of modification. And like Zach said, it's going to be expensive. It is a good thing that you can follow instructions. But unfortunately, that is not going to help you to swap an engine into a car that it wasn't made for. I don't mean to sound like a pessimist, but when you are doing custom modifications, there are TONS of little problems that just pop up, and you have got to be able to hand them, or you're not going to finish it. I own an 84 non-turbo 2 seater. These engines, while almost 20 years old, are still very good engines. There are Z owners on z31.com pushing over 500 hp with these engines. My recommendations? Buy a turbo z, or swap in a z31 turbo engine, OR just swap the turbo components (see z31.com). On the other hand... If I didn't believe in swapping foreign engines into Z's, I wouldn't be on this forum. If you think you are really up to the swap, I say go for the gusto. LS1 with a turbo, hell ya. Or even an LT1 for that matter, as long as you use a turbo! (or you could take these guys suggestion and go with a blower-wouldn't have to worry about the exhaust manifolds. But what fun is that? tjcannon Posted July 8, 2003 Share Posted July 8, 2003 Easy to maintain? Easy to install? NO ELECTRONICS!!! I'm putting a small block chevy 350 into an 88 turbo right now. Holley 650CFM Carb. GM 700R4 Tranny. All I gotta worry about is fuel, throttle, and kickdown cable, and it'll be running. Oh, I also agree that being able to follow instructions will get you NOWHERE in swapping a motor. If you're planning on dropping a chevy engine in there, there are VERY few people who have done it before to the Z31. No one's gonna be there to answer your question about oil pan clearances around the steering, or anything else you might run across. Good luck with your swap, whatever you decide to put in it.
