280Zen
Ok, it may be a dumb question, but I know there is not a oil temperature switch on the 280zx NA but there is one on the 280zx Turbo models. Where is it located? neither haynes or chiltons even mentions it. I see it on the wiring diagram, but don't know where the sensor is located at? SleeperZ
It's not a switch, but a sender for the gauge. It's located on the oil pan near the drain plug.
Drax240z
Thats where it is... Anyone ever mapped one out? I't would be an interesting feature to add sometime.
280Zen
Thanks, Yea I thought it was in the oil pan but none of the manuals or the Datsun service manual mentions it! so I figured Id ask. This is what Im trying to do. Use the turbo oil pressure/temp gauge and the NA volt gauge along with the digital clock on my NA 280zx. I have a turbo oil pan to use. Which brings up my next question, Is the 82/83 turbo oil pan and the NA oil pan the same other than the sensor pickups? The wiring diagrams are fairly easy to follow I know which wire goes where. This should be a fun mod.
z-ya
I installed an Autometer oil temp gauge in place of my clock. I installed the Autometer sender in the factory oil temp sender. I removed the OEM sender and drilled and tapped it for 1/8" NPT. I screwed the Autometer sender into the OEM sender. Then I screwed the whole assembly back into the oil pan. It works great. The max oil temp I've seen so far is around 190 deg F. I'm am running an oil cooler. Haven't had it one the track yet though. I'll find that out in August. Doug71zt
I did the Autometer install also. I recently sacrificed my stock oil cooler for additional intercooler space and looped the oil cooler lines. On a top end run the oil temp went to 220F after less than a minute at 15 psi boost. With the cooler - it never went past 180-190F. BTW - the Z runs at 168 mph at 15psi on the radar gun. Stock body with an airdam and splitter. I think its time for some more aero tricks IMO the oil cooler is required for a turbo conversion but I wouldn't worry about an oil temp gauge if you have a cooler. Cody 82 ZXT
Doug, where did you hit 168?
Doug71zt
Hey Cody - That would be on a straight stretch of road about 10 miles from my house. I don't live anywhere near a city. Just 8 miles of straight, flat road (that was reciently paved!!). It really doesn't take that much road to wind it up anymore. Cheers - Doug
Cody 82 ZXT
How did you verify that? I'm not doughting you. Just curious?

Hopefully its not one of those little yellow sheets that those friendly police are always wanting to hand out to people!
Doug71zt
Hey Cody - It was on a radar gun - not sure how accurate they are but the cops seem to think that they are - I guess that I could try the flying mile - Doug
