Lewis Maudlin
OK, I took the starter off of my 10 to 1 compression Z. I need a good starter that will fit my 355 Z. I will probably order from a wholesale shop. Any suggestion, including the brand.
Mike C
I am quite pleased with the Nippondenso motored CVR starters from Jegs. Fit either the 153 or 168 tooth flywheel for about $150. They are also adjustable (clockable) for clearance purposes. I have one on both of my trucks because of hot start problems. My big block cranked and would start even after a cell failed in the batt and it had only 10.5 volts. Kinda slow though... I'll NEVER EVER EVER buy a GM starter again. Guest Anonymous
I second the CVR....... cvr sb/bb chevy 153-168 tooth starter #171-5323 cost $146.99 Jegs # 800-345-4545
Lewis Maudlin
Will that starter work with my Z? A large starter with offset bolts came off of it. Will the straight bolt patter work where I had offset bolts?
Mike C
Most blocks, if not all, have the straight across pattern. Just check to make sure by looking at your motor's starter mounting boss.
Guest Anonymous
Don't some of the aftermarket starters have mounting for both block bolt hole patterns? Regards, Lone
Mike C
I'm not aware of one that has both patterns, but some (including the CVR) have two sets of holes so that they work with either the small (153 tooth) or large (168 tooth) flywheels. My Jimmy has an SM 465 4 speed which uses a bellhousing mount starter. The nose of a block mount won't go into the bellhousing, but the CVR without the nose bolted right up and works AWESOME. No more wondering if its going to start after putting the boat in the water
