Guest Anonymous
Well, Today after looking around I found a 1993 ford thunderbird SC at a price I dont think I can pass. Low miles 5 speed with the 3.8 supercharged V-6. Has anyone here used this powerplant before?
JoeinCA
I considered that engine for a long time... then realized i didnt have a long time to get a different engine and went with a chevy... The engines that are supercharged are only installed in FWD vehicles in the states. I am unsure of whether or not the N/A RWD 3.8: v6 transmisions fit up to the fwd motor. which has the water inlets on the wrong ends of the engines.. that is all i can remember off of the top of my head... i know that others have considered or may have even completed this swap... look around there is information.. Joe.
Guest Anonymous
The engines that are supercharged are only installed in FWD vehicles in the states Nope, The thunderbird is a RWD. Thats the only reason I am going for it. That is true with the GM supercharged cars on only FWD. If there was a supercharged GM in RWD I would go that way because I am a GM man at hart. But with the whole car for such little money I just dont think I can pass it by. I have been looking around and cant find this swap being done anywhere. If you know of someone that has done it please let me know where I can find the info.
Guest Aaron
This idea has been tossed around here before. I think there was a question about the bottom end strength with higher hp. I say go for it, I always like something different. I can't remember how the intake tract is on that car, but, if it is possible, I would say intercool the engine and swap out the pully's for some bigger boost. Guest Anonymous
Yes, I have read the same about the 3.8 for the bottom end. From what I have read the crank was a weak point. But I have also been told the supercharged motor used a stronger crank. This is just what I have been told I maybe wrong The stock set-up has a intercooler and I was thinking about the underdrive pullys as about the only mod if any for the motor. Well other then headers. denny411
The supercharged Bonneville SSE 3.8 will bolt to the RWD 700R4 V6 transmission, from 2.8 v6 camaro, firebird and s10`s. I guess this is a popular swap among the street rod crowd.
BLKMGK
Head gaskets are an issue on the Ford SC engines - be careful. A friends shop has had a few come in and th egaskets were blown so badly they ended up replacing the entire engine in at least one case. I'm not sure that's a motor I'd jump on unloess it were pretty cheap. There's at least one company out there rebuildingupgrading blowers for that motor and I think March makes higher boost pulley's for it too. Wonder if summit racing sells any adapter plates that you could use to allow the use of a v8 700r4?
