Guest gbvol54
I posted this question in the driveline area, but didn't get any hits. Thought I'd try here: What grade clutch are you guys running? I'm building a sbc to about 350 hp and working with a Muncie 4-speed (yeah, I know, a T-56 is the right answer, but a Muncie is what I've got). I'm wondering how much above a stock clutch I'll need for aggressive street driving. They get costly pretty quick. On the other hand I dont want an explosion waiting to happen so close to vital body parts. Opinions/advice?
Mike C
I have a Centerforce II pressure plate with a Mcleod Street/strip disc. I have been very pleased with both. The Mcleod diaphragm pressure plate and their disc is an excellent setup as well. This should be nice for a street car. I ran a Mcleod Borg & Beck/Long pressure plate and fiberglass competition disc for awhile, but not the way to go on the street! Man, it did hook though, and was a sprung hub with marcel so actually drove fairly well except for the oversize left leg!
pparaska
I'm using an old style Chevy clutch setup in a straight up Lakewood blowproof bellhousing, even though I'm using a Tremec 5spd (converted for GM use). I used a 91 Camaro 1LE option diaphram pressure plate. It's a bit stiffer than stock, but not very. With that I'm using a McLeod kevlar/organic (nee, "dual-friction") clutch disk. This was cheaper than the "centerforce" deal, but probably just as good. Centerforce is just so expensive for what you get.
Guest gbvol54
Once again, "it costs money to go fast" So I'm right in assuming I'm asking for trouble using a near stock (read cheap) clutch with 350ish hp, and that the failure could be dramatic rather than gradual? pparaska
For that level of HP, I'd think a stock 10.5 clutch would be fine. Add a kevlar/organinc clutch disc, and you gain a good amount of holding power.
Guest greimann
I didn't have good luck with stock replacement (auto parts store)clutch. Right now I'm running a ~350 hp motor with a T5 and 10.5" Centerforce I clutch. The pedal feel is near stock and the grip is good. When I ran a stock clutch, it seemed to get tweaked and bound up. Go at least 1 step up from a Pep Boys clutch.
