Few quick questions

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the help on my last two posts by the way, you guys are great!

Ok, here are my questions.

1. When a crate engine says it is say 350 horsepower, where is that measured from? Is that flywheel or rear wheel horsepower?

2. Does anyone know of any good places to buy crate engines, and would it be best to buy a stock GM crate and modify it myself, or to buy an Edelbrock crate or something along those lines?

Thanks a lot guys!

crate engines are normally rated with flywheel hp numbers

these people will build you what ever you want,

??"would it be best to buy a stock GM crate and modify it myself, or to buy an Edelbrock crate or something along those lines?"

that depends on the hp level you want, for a 383 around 425hp that will be lots of fun, theres several good crate engines available, but if you want over 500hp you build it yourself or have one of the top 4 listed people build it for you of find someone thats got a great track record over at least 10 years and give some kind of written garuantee as to all parts used, hp levels, and a dyno printout

I'm looking for somewhere between 300-400 hp at the wheels. I'm fairly sure that I want to go with the 350, so I was thinking maybe the ZZ4 engine. Is that a good idea, or what about an LT1 or LS1, since this car will most likely be my daily driver (but probably won't be used nearly as much as a typical dd).

Unless you want to do fuel injection and the costs in $ and labor, I would go with the ZZ engine. FYI, all new cars horsepower is measured at the flywheel as delivered. SAE net. This means with all of the accessories and exhaust as installed in the car. The old SAE gross ratings were at the flywheel, but without accessories and with a dyno exhaust. I believe on the ZZ engines, GM specifies what exhaust/carb combo was used for the power rating they advertise.
