Guest Craig280z
Hi I've got a 78 280z that I'm putting an LT1-4L60E in and I'm wondering how much of the transmission mount area I need to remove. I removed the brackets and most of the raised up area where the brackets were but do I need to remove that whole raised area around the top of the tranmission tunnel? Thanks for any advice. Guest Anonymous
REMOVE IT ALL with an air chisel equipped with a flat curved blade. Do not try to get between the spot welded trans mount and the car floor board because you can rip through to the car interior. Attack the trans mount directly by placing the chisel bit squarely to the mount closest to the floor board tunnel. The chisel bit will eat right into this flat area of the trans sheet metal in a straight line. After both sides are done there will be the spot welded strip still attachehed to the floor board tunnel >About 15 minutes work will give a real clean cut and a hardly noticeable thin strip of the old trans mount attached to the tunnel. Guest Anonymous
Yeah thats how I did it too with a air chisel, the first one took longer till I got the hang of it, second one less that 3 minutes. Wear some earplugs though, that sucker had my ears ringing for the entire night after using it. Regards, Lone
Guest kc6wfs
I used a sawall... took about 20 mins or so. Then grinded what was left. Dave
Dp351zcar
I used a cut off wheel in a 4.5" angle grinder and it came right off. Wear ear plugs! Don
Guest Craig280z
Thanks for the input. You guys are talking about removing that hollow ridge of metal that is about 2 inches wide and maybe an inch and a half tall and goes all the way around the transmission tunnel? Georgia Flash
Craig I just came in from the garage with the ear drums a ringing and three ruined air chisel blades That sucker basically laughed at my little air chisel, I tried three different blades on it and it seemed to do little good. I accidently went into the little thin strip of metal that you are talking about and have come to the conclusion that this is going to be the only way to get it off. Um I have to go and buy some new chisel blades before I can continue. And maybe some ear plugs,....eh what's that you said?
Tim240z
Craig, I left that piece behind (the channel like thingy), but mine is a 240z,not sure if there's a difference. Both the 200 4R that I originally planned to run, and the T56 fit fine. Tim
Guest Craig280z
Geogia Flash I started trying to attack the welds that held on the small brackets. That didn't work. Once you get the chisel in that raised metal just below those brackets, it's like butter. I have never used an air chisel before but I was suprised at how easy it was to cut through the metal. It was very loud and I am glad I had earplugs on. The hard part has been trying to grind down what is left behind after using the chisel. I'm going to have to buy a new grinding wheel tomorrow. Man, that is slow going but I'm almost finished Craig
Georgia Flash
Yep I really wanted to leave that piece of thin strip thing intact for a little more support but the next time I sit in the tranny tunnel with my trusty air chisel that thing is toast! Guest Anonymous
my transmissiom mount removal came out very clean with no grinding on the remaining strip. At first I applied a lot of pressure to the pistol grip of the air chisel which actually slowed its performance. When I allowed the air chisel to fully work itself with a relaxes grip the sheetmetal became "butter"
silicone boy
"I've got a 78 280z that I'm putting an LT1-4L60E in and I'm wondering how much of the transmission mount area I need to remove." I was just wondering, is the clearance more of a problem with a T56 in a 240Z. I'm willing to do it if necessary in my 280 (got the chisel blades ready to go), but I thought there was enough room in the later cars. Guest Anonymous
Mine is a 280 and I took it all out except for a strip because of clearance problems for a 2004R trans. It is really quite easy if you let the air chisel do the work.
