Buying dipsticks from dips***s

Recommended Posts

Engine finished, nothing to do but install a dipstick, and add oil. Sounds simple enough. Only thing is, my engine came with no dipstick. So we go down to the local "speed shop" and tell them what we have. (80/85 350 block passenger side dipstick) A few days later we go back and pick up our order. The old tube is lying on my workbench, and is about 8" long. they sent me is about 28" long and a different outsice diameter. I call them and am told that it is the correct one. I reply that I've never seen a dipstick that stuck up higher than the injector stacks.

AARRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!

The block casting number is 14010207 and the stick is on the right(passenger) side. is there something wrong wiith me, or my engine, or did the counter people just fail Special Ed?

in many cases I think that the guys behind the counter are aflicted with (D.K.S.A.D.C.) ( DON,T KNOW S##T and DONT CARE.......comonly know as DUMB SHI$ DISEASE!) a fairly common disease that seems most comon among minimum wage jerks that can,t get another job!

in most cases the quick cure is a trip to the local chevy dealer to purchase the correct dipstick,or the use of a tubing cutter to shorten the tube and a dremel to cut off and remark the extra long dip stick after carefully filling the oil pan and marking the correct oil level on that custom dip stick

BTW if you hang around with those afflicted with DUMB SHI$ DISEASE! you could catch it, its best not to stay within 30-50 yards of those so afflicted, because its slightly contagious, it seems to be spread by listening to those prior victims

It's been my experience that when buying from hot rod or 'speed shops', that unless you are buying something super sexy, like a 8-71 supercharger, or big buck item.....Dumb @ss syndrome definitely applies....the guys just don't think of the small purchaser in the same light....too bad...good customer service is hard to find.

You could try the machine shops...they tend to have all kinds of 'junk' laying around and you can sometimes get it for free. When I bought and installed the Vortec heads on my truck, my machine shop gave me a set of valve covers (center bolt....I only has old style side bolt). They even ran them through the wash bay for me....all for a nominal price of $10.

Heh...

Best thing to do is to find out who actually works on their car at the store. They are the only one who will understand all the little nuisance items that are neccessary and will generally be familiar with a few different types of cars.

Eh... actually, just try to not deal with imbeciles, and request to speak with someone whose head is not wedged neatly in their large digestive tract... (I'm going to have to say that to someone now... it's like turrets only complicated)

darnit... I just started thinking about what i still need to do in order to DRIVE my Z TOMORROW!!!

And i completely lost my previous train of thought...(which may be on it's way to russia).
