Guest vodkaboy
i am currently seperated from my car , and i was wondering just how much room we have to work with in our engine bays to shoehorn something in... right now, i have compiled a list of engines i might want to swap, and many of their specifics, so here goes A Outside of valve cover to outside of other valve cover B Outside of exhaust manifold to outside of other exhaust manifold C Height from bottom of sump to top of air cleaner D Height from bottom of sumt to highest point on intake manifold E Height from bottom of sump to top of Carburetor F Length from rear mounting surface to water pump pulley G Length from rear of intake manifold to water pump pulley Engine CID Sump Starter Weight A B C D E F G Chevy SB 350 etc rear right 550 22 26 27 27 25 26.5 25 Buick V8 430/455 middle left 600 23 28 30 30 27 29 22 PontiacV8350/400 rear left 590 22 27 31 29 26 28.5 27 PontiacV8 455 rear right 640 23 27 33 32 28.5 29.5 27 Caddy V8 472/500 middle right 600 23.5 28 32 30.5 29 30 28.5 what would fit, and what wouldnt? (and im really only thinking length/width... if its too tall, i can cut the hood, or just drive without it for a week or 2 and show everything off). any other engines im missing that i should be considering?[/code]
zguy95135
ive seen a V-12 in a Z before so you could pretty much put anything in there
Guest vodkaboy
ive seen a V-12 in a Z before so you could pretty much put anything in there maybe i should rephrase... what can i put in there with a minimal amount of cutting and modification to the engine bay (save for the usual mounts and etc...) Guest Drewz
The chev is the best overall from the choices listed but another option is the Ford 289 as it has a narrow fitment for this application, weight, and they scream reliably as does the GN-V6. Depends on teh budget and how far you want to go?? I am running a chev 350 but still find the 289 an interesting option. Don't forget the Dodge 340 as a possibility as well. ThPontiacs are pretty wide and head/exhaust to steering shaft will be a major issue as well as the wide blocks that the buicks run.
JustAFantaZ
I can't believe the Chevy and Pontiacs are almost the same width. I remember seeing two people who did Pontiac Z's, and they had LOTS of trouble with the clearance and headers compared to the Chevy. They had to cut out a lot of metal for the shifters too. And we Chevy V-8's would kick their @$$ in races all day long.
Guest Drewz
the angle that the exhaust bolts to the head is a big diff.
DavyZ
the angle that the exhaust bolts to the head is a big diff. EXACTLY! It can make all the difference in the world. Davy
