Motor mount clearance problem?

Recommended Posts

I just tried to fit check my motor mounts and one didn't fit. They are the same GM part number as in JTR and the driver's side one hits the sterring shaft. I recently put in urethane bushings; everything looked good but could I have rotated the assemby? If this isn't the problem would it be wise to just grind off the part of the mount that interferes? Thanks

Are you POSITIVE that you have the spacers on the correct sides??????

I can almost put money on it that you DO NOT. The motor mounts have little to do with the steering shaft----the set-back plates and spacers DO.

Throw up some pics if you can.

Negative, I can tell you from experience that the motor mount will touch the steering shaft on some cars. Mine did the same thing on my old 75 Z and no one seemed to know what I was talking about.

The spacers and set back plates have nothing to do with the mount touching because the mount bolts up to the cross member then the set back plates and spacers bolt up to them.

I have since done away with the JTR set up and went with the MSA set up. No problems now.

dsommer also had a problem with fitting the motor in the engine bay and clearing the shaft--it turned out to be his spacers were swapped from side to side. Also, there has been more then one member who has installed the set-back plates running backward which moves the engine forward in the chassis.

I'm surprised that there are JTR cars from the exact same years that do not have clearance issues and ones that do.

I don't think that's a problem. From what I remember, the corner that I ground off had two steel pieces but they weren't joined at the corner, so I figured that grinding off a little bit couldn't hurt (what else was I gonna do?)

I'm in Huntington Beach, south So.Cal.

I did a search on this once. It seems there were several people who had the same problem. They all, including me, just trimmed off the part that was in the way. It shouldn't need much clearance, not alot of movement there!
