Guest Shiin
I'm looking for a fairly inexpencive 350 SBC. Looking to get around 230-300 hp to the wheel for fairly cheap. I was wondering which car had an engine that could produce thoughs numbers with almost stock parts. I did a search and turned up minimal to no answers. Is it possible to build a v8z for under $2500? grumpyvette
now admitedly this will take extra work but a 472-500cid caddy engine from a 1970-75 caddy will produce tons of torque, is an easy 375hp/500ft lbs and is only 50-70 lbs heavier than a sbc and only a few inches larger,(smaller and lighter than a bbc engine) it has the distributor in the front and would make an ideal swap in that those engines can be purchased for under $300 most places, rebuilt for under $1000 to almost 400hp and are exceptionally strong performers for the money. on the down side the engines are only meant to run automatic transmissions and your on your own for swap info but still Id do it in a split second if I could find a (Z) body in perfect shape cheap (HEY GUY JUST AN OPTION YOU MIGHT THINK ABOUT) plus youll have an engine swap thats rather unique and be able to smoke the tires in any gear! utvolman99
You can build a great engine for that kind of money. Call around the salvage yards and find a 350 engine to build. You should be able to find one for under $100. Spend you money on what makes power! (Heads, camshaft, intake). Buy a rebuld kit from Norther Automotive, they have by far the best prices. Engine $100 Dart Iron eagle heads $850 Northern automotive kit $300 Machine work $250 Camshaft/Lifters $200 Intake $160 This still gives you some wiggle room to stay under $2500! Guest Anonymous
If 250hp will do for you, then see your Chevy dealer, I got the Goodwrench plain jain replacement 350 4 bolt main for 1300 bucks complete long block, no intake, distr, water pump or manifolds. Its a brand new block, from reports on another site it has powdered metal rods and a cast crank. Car craft changed the heads and cam and got over 400 hp with it. From the factory it runs a low 8-1 with 76cc heads, but it builds a reliable 250hp and over 300 ft/lbs of torque, or roughly double the torque of the stock L6. Anyway, not being a salesman, but for the dough its cheap, its new and its at your chevy dealer (price around dealers though, they can vary 2-300 bucks). For slightly more you can also get into a 300hp HO motor I believe for under 2k. Just some ideas. Regards, Lone

Guest Shiin
Thanks for the help guys. Know I have another question to ask of you I have a chance to get a complete 350 sbc motor and 350 turbo tranny guaranteed to run, and a 30 guarantee. The motor cam off a 75 caprice. the question is how much power did this engine put out stock and is it worth picking up for $475?
Guest Anonymous
Look out for 305 cubic inch motors in the Chevrolet Caprice. Look up MorTec on a Google search and print up some Small block V8 casting numbers for your reference and learn where these numbers are located and what these numbers mean to help you identify chev small blocks..and cylinder heads. As a rule of thumb an early run of the mill 350 with a stock 4 barrel carb should run about 200 "real" horsepower to spin the rear rubber off about any early Z and a 2 barrel about 180 hp or less. 350 turbo transmissions are about fuel wasteful for a street car. A 2004r or 700 R4 automatic over drive tranny is the best. It is hard to find an inexpensive donar vehicle with a 350 SBC and overdrive auto.Learn to understand what you are looking at before you buy.For $475, I would want some performance parts like 4 barrel carb and some 1.94/1.50 cylinder heads and some chrome shiney stuff. $250.00 is more like it for any good used 350 in these hard times. This 350 SBC stuff needing rebuilds are going for free if you are looking hard for it!
Guest Shiin
Thanks for the warning Tomahawk Z I was planning on using a 5 speed instead of the auto tranny. But I will take time before I acutally buy the motor, or any motor for that matter now. Looks like I still need to research more before I choose a motor to use for the conversion. Thanks all
