Guest midnitz
Looking for suggestions on an emissions friendly camshaft that will still help with power much better than stock. I currently have the schneider 270 cam....at 107 LSA it rumbles and lopes.....not good for streetability. Engine is normally aspirated, stock injectors, new AFM, new fuel psi reg, etc.etc... my goal is to get the original N42 engine, get the head ported, coated, stainless 1 piece ferrea valves, coated headers, ported and coated intake, normal throttle body, nice irridium plugs, MSD ignition, JE or ROss pistons for a 10:1 compression engine. I would also like to inquire about adding a stronger 5 speed transmission inplace of the weak nissan 5 speed. (it has been torn down 3 times in the past 5 years) and I am sick of it. T5 bolt up to the N42 block? let me know Roberto
Clifton
I though Ca. had a thing were 20 year old cars didn't get stiffed. As for the trans I can't imagine your N/A motor breaking one. It's taken me years to break one ( 5th gear) and that's with a turbo. Either way a 280ZXT T5 will bolt up but they are notchier. Some like it, some don't. johnc
The stock cam is the most emissions friendly one. From the 270 degree spec in your post it sounds like you have the L7 cam. Try the 13001-N3626 cam from Nissan Motorsports (434" lift and 256 duration.) Its commonly referred to as the "Slalom" cam and it should work well with the mild build you're planning. Iridium plugs ar a waste of money, you don't need JE or Ross pistons for the build you're planning (stock pistons are plenty strong enough), go with a Crane ignition over the MSD, and the Nissan 5 speed is plenty strong enough. If you've had to tear the trans down 3 times in 5 years either you're destroying it with your driving or the rebuilder doesn't know what they are doing. SCCA ITS racers can go two to three years on a trans rebuild.
Guest midnitz
OK...the Nissan 5 speed has an inherent flaw from the design table...the 5th speed shaft nut backs off from the shaft thread due to the rotational orientation of the thread and the way the shaft rotates. This is what has happened. My driving is aggressive nonetheless and this is why I asked for a transmission upgrqade recommendation. I understand the stock cam is the most emissions friendly....but the scope of my question still remains, is anyone familiar with a cam that will give me good power and run clean enough to pass emissions? I am aware that the lobe separation is creating havoc on my idle....the overlap dumps too much unburnt fuel into the exhaust.... as for the nismo cam I will look into it. I will probably also go with a stroker crank and some Pauter rods so custom made pistons are a must.

This is what has happened. This has been a know problem for 25 years and has a number of good solutions. Talk with your rebuilder. If he doesn't know how to fix it, then contact Andy Craig at Dandos in the bay area.
Guest midnitz
Thanks!....I will pull the trans when I am ready to rebuild the powerplant.... I hope to be pumping out about 225-240hp at the crankshaft, this should be fun for the streets and autocrossing. Most importantly I want good headsnapping torque. thanks again!!
