Im having the weirdest issue (atleast I think its a problem) when I put my car into park, or gear, or reverse... doesnt matter.. but it rolls, it will roll backwards no matter what I have it in!!!

Am I going nuts, or is this normal? And if not, what do you think would case this to happen? seems unusual to me...

I put the car in drive, and it rols backwards!! :(

is there enough fluid in it.....if there is, check the line pressure in each gear.just throwing out some ideas there

Very weird. Firstly reverse operates at nearly double the pressure as forward gears in an automatic, so low fluid probably isn't the case since what usually happens is the car barely rolls or takes off with a jerk after a moment of no movement. But hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained, it could be that simple I suppose (not usually for me, but hey maybe your luck is better than mine, it would'nt take much for that to be true). See the next suggest... :D

Two things I can suggest. Pull the dipstick and look at the fluid and smell it. (Why, what are you smoking crack Lone?) If its brownish looking and smells almost exactly like varnish then its toast, put a fork in it, the trannies done. It means its been overheated and things are needing to be replaced inside (if your lucky no hard parts).

If its red and clean, then drop the pan (either way actually) and look for metal or alot of clutch material in the bottom of the pan. Baring any material found, you can get a manual and try adjusting the bands and then give that a shot.

If I were guessing I'd say one of the clutch packs are simply not holding its sun gear tight and its moving causing a result less than what you expect or want. Sounds like a rebuild is in order to me, but thats just a guess.

Two things in the future will have your automatic loving you, firstly when its rebuilt, add a shift kit, no not for the tire chirping second gear (which it will on most shift kits) but to loosen the slip into the next gear. Slip = heat, heat = death to transmissions. Secondly an additional transmission cooler, don't rely on just the radiator tank to cool it, would you cool things with warm water? Didn't think so. Doing both of those things will increase the life of the tranny drastically, an extra clutch disk or two in the clutch packs is usually a good idea too. Find a competent rebuilder and they'll know the tricks to put on the tranny you have. Good luck with it, sorry this got so long, but I just can't seem to keep anything brief.. (hey the ladies like it.. haha).

Hmmm, if it rolls in park, thats a bad thing. Theres a parking lock prawn (not sure thats the right term, I think so) that is SUPPOSED to engage in some rather large teeth to lock it into park. Unless it got broken off by someone slamming it into park while it was still rolling, it shouldn't roll in park at all. I'd pull the pan on it, bet you find some interesting things laying down there.

Ps: Isn't there a vacuum modulator on the TH350 and is it hooked up? I believe it helps to determine shift points..

Does it drive at all?

1 If it does not, is the drive shaft hooked up. :D

2 If it does and it doesn't shift into hi gear or does at a very hi RPM then it is probbly low on oil.

Also try a fluid and filter change, it can work wonders.

If I remember correctly when it shifts into high

gear it locks up more clutches so it needs more oil and if if it's not there it can't do it.

Last time I worked on a TH350 was 23years ago.

Lone I think the term is "Parking Pawl"

I have noticed that im loosing slight amounts of fluid from a clamp at the radiator, so maybe I am low on fluid... (havent checked it yet)..

But im willing to bet that the transmission is in need of a rebuild, I pulled it out of an old pickup in a field.

I gave the car to a friend who blew out the R180 in the rear, and the car sat for 3 years untill I took it back.

Now, that I have reinstalled a new rear end (R200 you can read my painful posts about the problems with that..) I have noticed that the transmission doesnt kick down like it should... it gets to 5000 rpm before it shifts into final gear.. and in my oppinion its running through 1-2 gears WAY too fast... with 3.90 gearing its freeway RPMS are not so great with this problem.

I do have the kickdown linkgage installed as it always was, but now it doesnt appear to work correctly...

Is it possible that just low fluid would cause it to roll freely in any gear (including park) ?

it even rolls in park :(

Thanks!!!

hrmm.....

The Vaccum modulator could be the cause, I see what looks like a vacum canister it has a small rubber hose that hooks between it and the vacum imput and that rubber hose appears to be kinked!!

Do you think that the rubber hose being kinked could cause this?

I will cut down the hose today and see if I cant get it to fit better... it did go into park and not roll at one time..

driving it, it doesnt make any noise or anything, shifts pretty smooth but doesnt shift at the points I would like it too.

hrmm... I will need to pull the pan and take a look also.. I hope that their isnt metal laying in their!! smile.gif

Thanks for all of your help

Well, I am currently attempting the impossible myself, I am rebuilding a TH400. bonk.gif Im about 80% done with it. 2thumbs.gif I do know that the park pawl is completely mechanical, no fluid involved. So if the trans is working in other gears, its either the linkage is inproperly aligned, or the pawl itself is snapped. Hope that helps. cheers.gif

Dan, definitely try the modulator and make sure its working right, it has to do with shift points. Also in the TH350 and 400 is a governer on the drivers side in the middle. Its a gear driven centrifugal deal, it controls shift points to, but its not readily adjustable (you can shave the weights in it to raise shift points, but its not necesary or even advisable in this application). Theres nothing that can really go out in it though.

I'd try the modulator and see how it is from there, that may just solve things for you or at least it'll remove one more suspect in your transmission. Good luck with it.
