A stupid water pump question

Recommended Posts

I think the short style water pump was used for late 70's-mid 80's corvette almost exclusively. Fortunately for us, there is lots of room between the motor and radiator, so the long style works fine. The short style will work too, if you already have one, you just have to make sure your pulleys are aligned correctly...

I'm not sure about vette's, but the long water pump I believe was on every chevy passenger car and truck after 1968 (? thats a guess it was right around there). IMHO the long style is easier to find brackets that fit well, at least they're more common. A simple stud mount and support bracket up high on the passenger side works very well. I'm sure theres short setups too that are just as easy, but nearly every one I remember seeing in person outside of one that I recall used the long pump.

One reason a person could argue for using the short pump is there are a few more aluminum water pumps of the short style, weiand makes a long one, and theres aluminum spacers to make a short pump a long pump. So it comes down to if you can find the brackets you need, either works, neither is better cooling than the other as far as I know and with the room in front of the engine it doesn't matter which you use.

Yeah, it was somewhere around 1968-1970 that passenger cars started using the long WP. Vette's kept using the short one for years.

BLKMGK went through this. He started with the short pump but had so much trouble finding pulleys and brackets that he liked for it that he went to the long pump. It's easier to use the long one, so start with that.

Water pumps can be confusing. There are different variations of the short pump. Used on small block passenger cars until 1968, on small block trucks until 72, and on Corvettes through 1970. In 1971 the Corvette got its own short pump that isn't as short as the passenger car pump and has a 3/4 inch pilot instead of the 5/8 pilot on the original short pump. Then in 1984 it went reverse rotation and they changed the spacing a little AGAIN. The 82 pump is different than all the others, but I'm not sure the details. Same spacing as the 84 but standard rotation? That would be my guess.
