I think that looks sell a car more than anything else, even if the other stuff you can't see is really trick, so your car might be worth anywhere from $4K to $10K depending on how beautiful it is. "Worth" is totally subjective, so you'll have to find the 'right' buyer at the right price to make a deal you are happy with. Sounds like you have a very nice car. Guest Anonymous
As Davy said, its worth what someone will pay for it, but you'll never see 17k out of it unless you get a VERY motivated buyer who just can't live without it. Thats one of the rubs I have on these cars and one reason I'm very close to pulling my engine and trans and getting rid of mine. I'm probably closer to half that figure and I know I'll have as much as you do in it if I want the car to be VERY nice so with my recent financial situation I'm at a quandry. At any rate, Davy's figures are much more in line with the actual. I've seen some SUPER nice hybrids being sold for 5-6k so my opinion is drive it, enjoy it and if you drive it long enough you'll have your moneys worth out of it, but selling it will probably just get you a big bath. Guest jdllaugh
What's my 2001 Volkswagen GTI worth. I paid $18k for it a year ago.... A lot less, I can tell you. You said the paint was done in '98. If you've been driving it for four years, you've gotten your money's worth. From what I've seen on e-bay and Car Trader online, you would be doing good to get $6k. But, you never know. See my recent post on the Supercharged Ford currently on Ebay. He claims a $55k investment. The current bid is $18k and the reserve has been met. That's less than a third of his claimed investment. And I think the high bidder is nuts.....
Guest jwelch
Lone is right. I would keep it and drive it until it isn't fun anymore. Mine has been in the garage for a year now getting tweaks as I go. I've been disgusted with it a few times because I don't drive it, so the thought always comes up about selling it. I have at least 10K and I know I can maybe get half that. A bath is putting it nicely. I think the 18K Z is very lucky, I would be curious to see if the transaction goes through also. I've seen alot of people bid on these items and the get scared at the last minute. Regards,
Guest Anonymous
The last I heard was that Boyd Coddington and a few others made money on hot rods. It is sad to see all your eforts in time and money not apreciated by the potential buyers to recoup your expenditures. Hot rod zees are not a way to invest money but sure entertaining in other respects..Lone that is outrageous heresay about pulling your motor and tranny and getting rid of your Z. This forum would not be the same without your posts.
Guest the_dj
Mine was 8K, and knowing what it is I can safely say it would be difficult to get more than that for yours. : Mine is a small block, but it had 1500 miles on the motor when purchased (it was a new one, not a used one), came with a laptop computer for the Holley Commander 950, T56 tranny. Cont'd: Slotted rotors, stainless brake lines, all new components Gnose, ZG flares, fiberglass rear bumper, and 6 month old paint (100 miles since painted) Perfect interior Suspension work with new springs and coilover kit. 16x7 panasports with 225 rubber on them (new) Hope this helps, Sam
Guest Anonymous
Tee Zee, thanks for the kind words, even if I sell it, you wouldn't be rid of me that easy, I still have friends in low places on this site.. I may just keep the shell and when I get some money put something else into it and make a longer term project out of it that'll be smog legal yet honda lethal. (I really like that 7mgte swap Tony did) it'd still be a money pit, but by then I may be able to better afford it. I need a truck so my motor and trans will probably end up in a 55-59 apache truck(always liked em, lowered w/fat tires they look sweet and hold value real good) and the motor will likely have a holset turbo on it how bad would a honda boy feel getting smoked by a 3600 lb truck? pparaska
Most people lose sight of something when they think of the "worth" or "value" of something like a V8 Z. Sure, you pour X dollars in and, if you sell, get X/4 to X/3 dollars back "out of it". The rest of the "value" was the fun you had acquiring it (most likely building it), and having it, and showing it off, and taking all the comments about how cool it is and DRIVING it. That's hard to put a price on! It's the same kind of value that you lose when you buy a new high-priced car and take a bath on it a few years later through depreciation! But how many of you that are building or have built these cars ever THOUGHT you were building it to recoup any of the money? No, most if not all of us, build these cars because we like the process and the result. Sure, it's a HORRIBLE investment. But just about any car is. Go buy a new $40K car and tell me what it's worth in a few years - alot less! As someone on this site has in their signature: " Build it , Drive it, Enjoy it" (or something like that!) If you really feel you must sell it for financial reasons, but you still LOVE the car, think twice. The money, time, etc. that you'll lose can NOT be replaced. I've seen this happen way too many times and it always seems the first owner that sold it admitted that they should have found another way to find the measly few thousand bucks they sold their pride and joy for. I sure hope I never feel I'm in such a predicament that I HAVE to sell mine. More likely is that I'll not be able to use it or I'm just plain TIRED of it and want something else. Neither of those are on the horizon for me.
denny411
To get the most out of your project/hobby, you should do as much as possible yourself.(IMO) In my experience, the most fun of the project is tracking down parts, and trying to get the best deal possible on them. If you pay someone else to do it all, they will just look in a book or call the parts store, with no real concern of cost. The other side is, if they quote you a set price, they are more likely to cut corners and use the "cheapest" parts they can find, regardless of quality. Doing the work youself insures you will get the best price vs quality. Not to mention the personal satisfaction of knowing "you did it yourself" I pride myself on being able to find deals. Most people would be very surprised to know how little I have in my Z, and all the parts to go with it. My guess would be, much less than 1/2 retail. Guest Anonymous
Thanks guys, I know I'm not going to get anywhere near 17K out of my car. haha. I WISH!!! I know how it goes with street rods, its better to buy one done..etc, etc. My dad learned his lesson a long time ago. As for keeping the car, its fun!! I took it out yesterday and wow!! Its a blast!!! BUT, I want a new toy. Thats why I'm looking to sell it. I'd like to get above 10K. I'd be happy then. The car is nice too! Really really nice! hehe. 383 240z
I found the best way to get rid of a toy is to trade it for another toy that sombody is tired of I dumped my IROC for a built jeep CJ w/ 33-12.50's I could not sell it for $1200 but I got a jeep that he blew about 6 grand on and we were both VERY happy to have new toys Keith
