Hye guys, i will be looking at swapping in an lt1 or ls1 in my 280z in a little while, and have some questions for you guys...i have searched and everything, but did not find clear answers to what i was looking for.

 

Is there any difference in the cost of putting in an LS1 over and Lt1..besides engines costs etc.?

 

Will the JTR intsall kit give me everything i need to do the swap?

 

And also for the people who have done this swap...about how much did it cost for the complete swap...if you swapped it in yourself...the motors im looking at are around 3,000 or so.

Here's a reply from Phantom, who has one of the nicest LS1 Z cars:

 

Lone Star 1 and I both have done the LS1 swap. He lives in the Mesquite area and I live in Arlington. Kit parts for the conversion can be purchased from John@johnscars.com (214) 426-4101. Cost is purely dependent on the parts you use and how much of the work you do yourself. All inclusive, I doubt if you can do it right for less than $7,000.

Hey d3finitelymaybe! I grew up in Boise. First graduating class out of Capital High School. Graduated from U of I in Moscow.

Either the LT1 or LS1 are great engines but the LS1 has the attitude all the way. It's also a rare conversion now - only 5 or 6 running right now. JTR stuff is worthless for the LS1 - need to talk with John's cars if you want to go that way.

Yeah the LS1 is deffinetly a great motor but it is also a very pricey motor right now. The cost of them is coming down but for a low miles LS1 motor dont be shocked to pay $3,000+! :shock: The initial cost of the LS1 sucks but once you have it, its easy to get power out of them. I have heard of guys putting a bigger cam, some headers and an exhaust system and they are running 450HP+ :shock: (Now those are only hear says so dont quote me on that! :D ) So if you got the $$$ then I say get the LS1! You wont be sorry! :twisted:

 

Now the LT1 is also a great motor. I have one in my 280ZX(I think I am the only one with a LT1 in a 280ZX? Heck I dont think anyone has an LS1 in a 280ZX either??) and I am very happy with it. It is much like the old SBC but it has a lot of things that make it much better....EFI, reverse flow cooling(cool the heads first, which allows it to run 10.5:1 compression in stock form), alluminum heads(expect B-Body cars), the distributor is in front on top of the timing chain cover which allows you to leave the hood latch where it is! The LT1 also costs much less to buy than the LS1. I bought mine with a T56 tranny almost 2 years ago for $2200. Granted my motor had 92,xxx miles on it but I planned on rebuilding it anyways so that didnt really matter to me. The cost of parts is also considerably less than the LS1 because it is no longer the latest and greatest "SBC"(yes I know the LS1 is not really considered a SBC!)
