Any shortcomings to this setup?

See any shortcoming with this engine setup in '77 280Z?:

 

 

Stock block (N47/N42?)

P90 Head (mechanical lifters)

P90 Cam

P90 pistons

LD28 crank bolts

ZX exhaust manifold

T3 Turbo

Stock oil pump, water pump, and dizzy

Walbor GSL-392/255 Fuel pump

295cc/min injectors on custom 0-ring rail

Stock fuel pressure regulator <--- got to change this

Megasquirt (working on getting spark control too)

60mm TB

Large Spearco intercooler

2.5" intake piping

SPAL 16" cooling fan

 

EDIT:

 

...and 3" open exhaust with homemade turbo pipe

For some reason, I ordered most of my stuff from Nissan dealership. After getting the 'real' prices, I definitely should have picked up some ARP's.

 

I wonder if ARP has a complete kit for L28? I am using stock headbolts right now. :oops: Funds are getting limited, as I have spent ~$6,500 on this car so far...and it still looks like it came from the junkyard.

I can get anything for the L series locally in bham from Bham piston warehouse. They had the head stud kit in stock. And it was as cheap as online, or better. ARP stuff that is. Rings, bearings and such too.

 

You can order the heavy duty main cap bolts from Courtesy, and I would go that route over main studs, I have never seen anyone pitch a nissan crank out, and the main caps are hard enough to get out with bolts, studs would make it much worse, it seems to me.

If you could get your hands on an F54, i'd recommend that route. I just like the idea of the siamesed cylinders. Not a big deal and nothing against the N42, just a thought. Also, you'll need a zxt exhaust manifold to bolt the T3 up too.

Well, rebuilt the engine this weekend with the aforementioned setup and fired it up. So far so good, other than oil leak from having to remove oil pump and re-time dizzy/oil pump shaft. Having your manual handy helps tremendously, but since I didn't, I used my best judgement and went forward :oops: .

 

I should also mention that this is the 2nd time to rebuild the engine and that I had everything in place. The only difference was adding the P90 pistons and head.

 

Assuming I get a oil pump gasket tomorrow, I should have her on the road in about hour, including a 30 minute breakin of the engine. I will also need to tune a bit on Megasquirt since the expect to have much better flow than what I with the other head.

He is going stock bore, so any block should be fine. besides, show me someone who tore up a block without something else letting go.

 

Actually, the back two cylinders on the F54 block are supposedly hotter, and that is not an issue with the ealier block. I would not be scared to use either one.

 

You also need more then a 30 minute break in on the engine, especially if you used chrome rings. You should put at least 500 easy ie low or no boost miles on it before throwing down on it.

 

Thats my thoughts on the matter.

Thanks for the info Lockjaw. I didn't use chrome rings, but will none the less take it easy on it for a while. After I get it broke in a bit (200 miles), I will tune it a bit more with Megasquirt and take it to a dyno somewhere. Not having a pyrometer or WB to tune with is starting to scare me.

 

Oh yeah, what do you think is a safe boost level for this setup? I think 15psi is all the T3 is going to make efficiently according to what I have heard.

If it is a stock turbo, that is about its limits, and I would be worried about the shaft speed at that point more then anthing else. Make sure it stays there, once you get above that, you are asking for a rebuild.

 

Now if it has good bolted down thrust bearings, you should be able to get away with a little more, although then you really have to wonder about the efficiency.

 

So the really short answer is 15 is about the max I would go.

Safe isn't fun! :wink::D I spin my hairdryer... er..umm... T3 at 16-17psi and she seems to be fine. Effecient anything past 15psi, probably not, but fun anyway :twisted: Crank it up 'till she pings then back off a bit. Glad to hear it's all going smooth for ya.
