Weight Distribution With Different Motors?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the hybrid Z so I have a couple of basic questions about motor weight and how it affects the car. I know a cast iron SBC weighs about 550 lbs, but, I don't know how much the I-6 Datsun Z motor weighs.

I understand that the shorter compactness of the Chevys hold their weight back closer to the center of the car which helps with the front to rear balance. So how does a SBC swap affect that balance? And then of course there is the aluminum LS1 which I believe weighs 380 lbs; how does that affect the F/R balance? And if someone could give me a weight on the Datsun motor I'd appreciate it.

Welcome to HybridZ..

there has been much discussion in here on that subject..

The search button is an invaluable tool in her to use, and you'll find alot more than I can tell you here..

There is a guy in here named BlueOval and he has weighed an L6 and I believe the weight of that motor is around 420-440 pounds or so.. right in that small area.. If you search the subject you'll find the exact weight he's given.. Im thinking it was 426lbs. but I could be off a few pounds on that..

Also.. there are some members in here who have done, and more in the process of, an LS1 swap.. if you search "LS1" you'll find about everything you need to know about that swap into a Zcar..

Hope that helped a little.

The z motor is lighter by 75 to 100 pounds depending on sbc heads, but the v-8 sits further back and actually has about the same weight distribution.

Check out the Jags That Run conversion manual. It too is an invaluable tool. It has a good amount of information on weight, including things you can change to actually come out weighing the same, or less, after your swap.

There is also an interesting thread on here about the old scarab style conversion vs. the JTR conversion method. Many of us are eagerly awaiting the competition.

LS1 V8 is actually 25 lbs lighter than the L28 but an expensive conversion. When I did my conversion my car, with the L28, weighed 1,400 lbs front and 1,400 lbs rear for 2,800 lbs total. After the conversion it weighed 1,400 lbs front and 1,430 lbs rear for 2,830 total. T56 added the weight. These weights were done with 3/4 tank of gas on a certified truck scale and do not include any chassis reinforcement, roll bar or strut tower bars.

Not quite right on the LS1 weight, as the GM lists a complete LS1 at 450 & 490 lbs fully dressed, the latter being w/ flywheel & clutch as opposed to flexplate for an auto. Then you add the weight of the transmissions, so it's not much lighter when all said and done, just more power & torque and quite a bit less money in your checking account. :?

I realize this question was answered in this forum already, twice actually. But both repsonses had different weights listed.??? So since this thread was last posted in some time ago, and I'm sure many more LS1 swaps have been done since then, can anyone give me the weight of the LS1 or just verify that one of the weights mentioned was/is correct? I apologize for bumping such an old thread, but when I did my search this was the only result for "LS1 weight" and searching through all the posts with LS1 seemed like it would take me a month! I did read a good deal of them, which has only gotten me more excited about my swap. Thanks ahead of time.Oh, and since it's already being bumped does anyone know the weight of the T56?
