Well, just got home... so far so good. I stopped at that car wash and cleaned off what oil I could get to, and after getting home I dont see any oil on the crossmember or sides of the oil pan... I didn't have any newspaper or cardboard handy to put under there... I'll do that when I take it to work tonite. Unfortunately there's still a very strong stench of burning oil in the car :( hoping that will clear up after a few days... I'm thinking some of it is just 'soaked in' to the inside of the car as well... so I'll need to let air out.

Anyways also just wanted to say... man you rock :) thanks for letting me use your space and tools and for your help  even though in truth it was more like I was the one (barely) helping you! You saved me a wad of cash and some sanity too :) I only hope that I do someday, somehow get a way of repaying your generosity.

I'll update you again once I get something under the car and know for sure if it's still leaking or not :D and I"ll make it a point to get back under there in the next day or two and triple check those bolts.

oh and forgot to mention how nice it was to see the very nearly complete Mongoose... pictures dont do his work justice, his custom tail end is freakin awesome... and even though the car has a layer of dust already built up on the new paint job, the thing just looks awesome. I feel somewhat priveledged to have seen it evolve from a green, stripped hulk to what it is now, with my own eyes. Too bad it still isnt complete... was planning on asking you to take me for a spin in it! Eh I probably couldn't squeeze into that seat anyways... ah well. Very nice work Tim... almost hard to believe that one guy could accomplish that himself... very glad to see all your time spent has really payed off.

Well, good news and some possible bad news. Good news is that all that oil that was getting all over the place is definately gone... the crossmember has remained dry, thru the drive home from your house, then to and from work, and some errand running today. More good news is that the extreme, horrible odor of burnt oil in the car while driving is 99% gone, and the result is I can actually enjoy driving the car again w/o getting sick  There's still a litttttttle bit of smell in the car with the windows wide open occasionally but not any worse than it's ever been at the best of times. I'm a very happy camper right now :D to finally be able to drive the car, on a daily basis no less, after more than a month of having it parked.

Ahhhh but then there was last night... I drove the car to work and when I parked it put some newspaper under the engine, and sure enough when I pulled it out a couple hours later there was actually quite a bit of oil dropped on it in one spot, at the rear of the engine. So I made it a priority to get under the car today and see what was up... took it to a shop where I"m kinda familiar with the guy, he told me give him $10 and he'll lift it up and we'll see what's up. Anyways... turns out the oil drain plug wasn't even hand tight... hell it was about 1mm out of the pan! OOPS  ! So he tightened that up, and I asked him to check the oil pan bolts which he said seemed fine. So off to do other errands... park the car at KFC, picked a clean spot to park in, and when I came back out... yet again there are some drops there in that same spot....

So I dunno... I really dont want to think it's coming from the rear seal... $400 to replace the front, rear, and oil pan seals.... already having to replace the pan gasket... I'm gonna do something nasty to someone if that rear seal is leaking again. When we lifted the car there was lots of oil on the tranny still, but the guy said that could easily have just been from the leak at the drain plug... so it's really hard to tell. I'll put some newspaper under there again after driving to work tonite and see if it is still leaking at all... maybe those last couple drops were just leftovers? Cross your fingers for me.

Tim, never heard of that beer... something I can find at any grocery store?

Okay, hopefully/probably my last update here. Took the car to work last night, stuck some newspaper under there, and sure enough there's still a little leak happening. I work as a dispatcher for a tow truck place, so I called the driver that was working and asked if he'd come hook my car up and get the front up in the air :D Got under there and there is some new oil build up around the rear of the oil pan/front of the tranny... so I'm thinking more and more that the rear main seal may indeed be fuffed. But I did remember that you advised the pan bolts may loosen up a little after driving it around, so I set about checking them, and sure enough every single one of them was pretty loose, I tightened them up a tiny bit, like 1/4 turn or so, with very little effort or force at all... the tow truck driver who is also a friend of mine, has built a few chevy engines in the past, and kept an eye on me as I was doing it, to make sure I wasn't using too much force to tighten them... as a matter of fact, he agreed with my feeling that they all seemed a bit too loose and easy to turn. So... snugged them all up (hope I did get them tight enough... wish I had a torque wrench!!!), lowered the car back down and let it run for a good long while, with some new newspaper under the engine. Turned it off and let the newspaper sit the rest of the morning... pulled it out before I left work and w0000000000000t not one drop of oil on the paper!!!

I'll check one more time when I return to work on friday night but it seems that my oil leak is finally 100% FIXED :D:D:D Amazing how one great HybridZ citizen helped me fix in one shot, on his own free time, what paying two different 'mechanics' several hundred dollars a piece could not take care of. Many thanks again Tim, now where can I pick up some of that beer??

Check em again. If they are still tight, then fine, if not, then nip them up and check again after a while. Or, you could use some low strength loctite next time, at least on the ones you can get to easily.

They should be ok now, but better to be safe and check again after a while.

Tim

 still leaking. It's very hard to tell whether it's leaking from the rear of the oil pan or from down in between the engine and the tranny. Still thinking it's the pan since tightening up those bolts seemed to slow the leak down a LOT, and again... that damn rear seal is SUPPOSED to be new and the guy that put it in is SUPPOSED to know what he's doing.... I'm really desperate to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one for obvious reasons. I'll get under the car again asap and tripple check those pan bolts to be SURE they are still tight.
