philiow313
The differential on my '80ZX is in dire need of replacement. Problem is, I'm not sure which diff I have. I THINK it's the R180, but I cannot be sure. Will an R200 differential fit easily, and if not what kind of modification/fabrication do I need to do? And what about the U-Joint halfshaft to CV shaft swap? What is required for that? Just in case its important in this, it is a 5speed tranny. jonzer12
r 180 is visibly smaller than the r200 and has (5?) bolts around where the halfshafts go in, one of the two as a rounded diff cover too, i think the r200 has a more square one, but i forget which is which. Guest Aaron
I didn't think any of the ZX's had a R180. I could be wrong though. If you want to go CV, you should have it easy. Get the CV shafts and differential from a 81-83 ZX Turbo, and it should bolt in. If you actually have an R180, then you may need a few more things (like driveshaft). Edit: I was wrong. According to ZHome.com, the ZX did have the R180. 280ZX 79 MT,4 Spd,2 Seater (3.364) (R180) 280ZX 79 MT,5 Spd,2 Seater (3.364) (R180) 280ZX 79 All With Automatic(3.545) (R180) 280ZX 79 MT,4 Spd,4 Seater (3.364) (R200) 280ZX 79 MT,5 Spd,4 Seater (3.7) (R200) 280ZX-GL 79 (3.7) (R200) 280ZX 80 MT,2 Seater (3.545) (R180) 280ZX 80 Automatic 2/4Seat (3.545) (R180) 280ZX 80 MT,4 Seater (3.9) (R200) 280ZX-GL 80 (3.9) (R200) 280ZX 81-83 Automatic all (3.545) (R180) 280ZX 81-83 Turbo - all (3.545) (R200) 280ZX 81-83 MT (3.9) (R200) http://www.zhome.com/ZCMnL/tech/GearRatios.html
Brad-ManQ45
Can't guarantee this info is correct: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/6212/diffswap/diffswap.htm Says you have a 3.54 R180. The R180 rear cover is definitely rectangular - squared corners. The R200 has rounded corners. This page should illustrate: http://www.geocities.com/madmanadam/Z-car/r200swap.html
CruxGNZ
Aaron, Thank you! I have been wonderwing where the heck I got that differential listing from that I have posted a few times on here. I keep the slightly editied version here: http://www.hybridz.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=20595&highlight= !M!
danc
Some of the 79-83 ZXs had R180s. Think they were all automatics...
