Guest Anonymous
I didnt know what forum this should go in....but I figured this one might work. Could I pull a sbc from a chevy truck, and use the four wheel drive transmission. If so, what sort of modification would it entail to convert the car to 4wd. (i love awd and 4wd sports cars. GO SKYLINE)
Guest Anonymous
Arrange to obtain sawzall blades wholesale. What some one does to 4x4 a Zee is drop the Z body on a 4X4 frame and running gear of the same or approximate size wheel base.
Guest Anonymous
Yeah this has been approached before, people talking skyline drivetrains and all that. Someone had suggested a cyclone/typhon driveline (or astro van AWD perhaps since it'll bolt up a V8 I believe), but as was mentioned, you'll want a buttload of sawzall blades or a plasma cutter and it won't be a quick or easy swap (neat though!). For the cost and time, I think I'd just buy a WRX soobie though. (I know, not a sports car per se, more of a sports sedan) Regards, Lone
Guest Anonymous
ther'd be no way to just rebuild the front end?
Guest Anonymous
how feasable(sp?) would using the frame from said chevy truck be? or any chevy truck equipped with a sbc.? I would love to do this.....

Guest Anonymous
If you use an AWD setup the front wheels are your primary drive wheels. So, you wouldn't be picking the front wheels up in an AWD setup, so it would be really benificial actually (if you have a high or unlimited budget) otherwise just go with a RDW and high performance suspension and good tires, much cheaper and easier. Guest Anonymous
if i buy an awd astro-van or whatever...what would these major costs be...if I planned on doing the work myself. My dad runs a machine and die company, so I could have him do some if theres any machining... I could prolly get an astrovan or the like with a smashed rear end for real cheap .. (like $200) ...where do the costs come from.

Guest Anonymous
Yeah, Like G said.. For the astro/typhoon deal to work you'd need to determine where it would place the engine in relationship to the wheels and see how that would work within the Z chassis. So, you'd need to measure everything and then see if theres even room in the tunnel for that arrangment to work. It may be that it might not all fit, the Z's tunnel back there is pretty cramped and I'm not familiar with the width of the astro/typhoon awd unit. If your willing to build a whole new front subframe, probably a modified tunnel and that doesn't even address if the track width is much to wide, the steering would all need to figured out as the van doesn't use a rack I don't believe, then its probably do-able, but I'd give it a 10 out of 10 scale... In other words... HARD SWAP IMHO! When your done you'd have a VERY expensive car or at least one that has a HUGE number of construction hours in my opinion. Its possible, but unless your a master fabricator, I don't think I'd try it. As I say, thats my opinion for what its worth. Guest Anonymous
Ok..just found a guy who just bought a boat...and has to get rid of his Z's (all in various stages of construction). SO i'm getting 2 bodies....without engines..and one rustbucket that runs....70,71,72. My plan is to tranfer the rustbucket parts to one of the 240s...and sbc the other one...I'll stick with that for now....the AWD thing is still in my head though..and if I can do this...I'll buy another one in a couple years...and try it. THanks for the help guys.
Guest Anonymous
sorry to post so much...but has it ever been done succesfully?
80LS1T
First of all there is a difference in 4 wheel drive and All wheel drive. Ever notice how it says in the manual of a 4X4 that you should not use the 4 wheel drive on dry payvment? Yeah thats because if you do I think you will rip up your front differental(sp?) Just a thought!
Guest Anonymous
yeah, 4wd is for trucks and more geared tword off road use and such...AWD is more for sports cars, for better take offs and handleing. I have a 94 AWD Talon and its amazing. Nothing like dumping the clutch at 5 grand and hearing a small chirp before your thrown back into your seat so hard its difficult to drive. I would look into an AWD setup, much more efficient then 4wd.

Moridin
What about the Skyline AWD drivetrain setup that Stony did? That seems much more feesable. I hope I'm not getting anything wrong hear, but I'm pretty sure he got the whole AWD setup in there. Someone with a better memory could maybe help me out
Guest Anonymous
Nope, he welded the holes in the pan shut, and his is 2wd only. Its been brought up before and I think stony was a bit sceptical as I recall about the skyline AWD working in the Z due to its placement in the car. He'd be the one to answer that, but I know his car is 2wd for sure. Regards, Lone
stony
My car is 2wd... the GTR awd system can be used but puts the motor so far fwd in the engine bay the radiator has to be mounted on the other side of the core support. the frame rails in front also need to be highly modified to clear the front axles and the passenger side floor needs to be highly modded to make room for the transfer case. You can do it... it will add alot of weight to the car. If i had a big budget i think it would be cool to do but i dont so i wont
