BobsZTwins
I posed this question on the Exhaust forum with no response, so I thought I'd try here. I've got a 260 with a 350 and a single turbocharger mounted just above and right of the right valve cover. As you can imagine, it generates a lot of heat so I'd like to get the manifolds, crossover, turbo housing and downpipe coated to reduce heat and get rid of the surface rust and the header wrap I have now. I'd appreciate any recommendations, good and bad, for coating companies and types of coatings. I've been doing some reading so I'm at least familiar with Jet Hot but don't know anyone that's used it. Anyone using Jet Hot coating? I found a place called Swain Tech Coatings in NewYork that has a white pearl coating done in 3 layers that ends up .015 - .020" thick. They claim >50% radiant heat reduction. About the same price as Jet Hot. Anyone know anything about this company? Thanks!
qwik240z
I had my 510 V-8's headers, intake manifold and valve covers Jet hot coated a few years ago. They have a great product. I can't give any firm numbers but the under hood temps were drastically reduced. The headers used to get so hot they would glow red. Now they are much cooler. You can see pics here: http://britishv8.org/swaps/510v8.htm It also looks great. The headers were very rusty looking when I sent them in to be done. BobsZTwins
Very clean looking conversion! Which Jet-Hot coating did you use, the 1300 or 2000? In searching the archives I've seen some posts complaining that the 1300 coating started flaking off after a short time. Thanks for the feedback! qwik240z
I don't recall which coating was used. I think it was called the sterling but I really don't remember. I had it done in 1999 and I have not seen any flaking. I do remember that the headers cost like $200 for both of them. Good Luck!
silicone boy
I like being able to coat any part I want at any time, so I got a can of Techline Coating's Black Satin ceramic stuff. It seems to hold up really well (in past applications). I've coated my turbine housings and headers. I'm thinking of doing the whole exhaust while I'm at it, becaue a little goes a long ways. It was about $100 per quart and comes in silver also. It's rated at 2000 deg and is air cured. As for temp reduction, their website claims it does well, but I wrap my headers and downpipes anyway. BobsZTwins
Silicone boy, Did you coat your turbine housing inside and out? I'm a little leary about internal coating.....flaking off and going thru the turbine can't be good. I'm surprised a DIY coating held up that well. silicone boy
BobZ, I didn't coat the inside for exactly the reason you mentioned. I'm worried about it flaking off.
danj
I had my entire exhaust system, including the muffler, ceramic coated by a company called Airborn Coatings in Oklahoma City. I shipped the parts to them via UPS and they did the job and returned them to me in 8 days. The cost was only about $12.50 per foot for coating inside and out. They did a great job and were easy to work with. If you want more particulars let me know. Dan H.

Heat wrap traps too much moister.
BobsZTwins
Dan, Thanks for the feedback. I looked over Airborn's website when I was investigating coating companies but I didn't know anyone that had used them. I think it's down to them or Swains in NY. One of the local turbo specialists has had success with Swains coatings on turbine housings and headers. I'm just concerned about internal coating flaking off and damaging the turbine. ToplessZ
I would like to see the link or more information on the airborne coatings. Sounds to cheap to be true but I dont know for headers if they charged for each runner it would be expensive. I want to get my turbo housing and manifold coated and maybe my exhaust once I get that sorted out.
