Guest Anonymous
ok I have a 305 but I am doing a swap to get the horespower can I beef this up with bigger pistons better heads, cam, crank ect to make this this a 350 or at least 300hp.And not spend an arm and a leg. I have torn the engine doun and am ready to start building it up but dont want to mess with it if i wont get the HP out of it. thx
Mike C
You can get 300 hp from your 305. Pocket port the heads and have a good 3 angle valve job done. Get the compression around 9.5:1 and run a cam with 210 degrees of duration at .050. Add a medium riser 4 barrel intake and some shorty headers and you should be there. At the flywheel. I have a friend with an '86 TPI 305 in his '74 Corvette convertible. It ran 13.97 at 100 mph in Houston. Not too shabby for a 305! (flat tappet hydraulic SLP cam, Edlebrock intake only because the OEM intake was warped, and a set of 1 5/8 blackjack headers with an 02 bung added. It does have a first gen DFI and harness. Car has 3.07 gears and a 2000rpm converter. ~3700#)
Guest Anonymous
Get a 350. If you have a stripped down 305 with really not much potential why build it up to simulate a 350 when you can do the same and probably cheaper with a real 350 for a lot more power. I just saw in the local paper that someone wanted $40.00 for a 350 block and two sets of heads Where ever you are at ..the 350's are available if you look for them. This question has been posed before and the consensus: 350 and you can turn it into a 383 real easy.

Guest Anonymous
Mike, gave you a good build up on a 305 in a nut shell but he could mostlikely give you a concise build up on a 350 with a lot more tourqe and Horse power.
Guest Anonymous
could always bore and stroke it to a 333 or a 334. but ultimately yea, get a 350.
Guest Anonymous
My friend built up a 305 engine and stuck it in an 89 S-10 truck, with a TH350 trans and he pulls consistant 11.48's at the track with that thing. Spent $2300 on the engine and trans. Running 11.3:1 compression and Ported L98 aluminum 350 heads, edelbrock single plane 4bbl manifold, headers (not sure what kind), high comp. hyper. pistons and forged H-beam rods, engine bored .40 over. grumpyvette
http://www.goingfaster.com/spo/343hp305.html if you used pocket ported vortec heads and a matching intake, like the Super Victor for Vortec Heads #2913 you would be close to 380hp-400hp with this build, add this cam crane 114681 ftsld.cam and youll be at about 410hp-415hp or want to get crazy? swap a crane #113841 solid lifter nitrous designcam in and add a 150hp nitrous plate and 540hp out of a 305 chevy is possiable
