When I first got my z 3 years ago, like most people I did not have a clue what I was getting into. I am always strapped for cash so I seem to just keep tearing more and more stuff apart.

Recently I decided to remove all of the stock wiring and electronics. Being as this is my first project car I have just been learning as I go.( with the help of this board) :) I am wondering if anybody has a basic wiring scematic for interior wiring. Lights, guages, etc... I am not really confident in my knowledge and dont know what needs relays, diodes etc..

Any suggestions or tips would be very helpful. Thanks!

What Z car is it? a 240 original?

If so, I don't think you will need very many relays. from the top of my head... i think i put some relays in for a few things:

Headlights

power ON relay (for turn signals, and gauges (oil, temp, water, gas). :D

The ignition is wired to the ignition switch

the starter solenoid is wired directly to the ignition switch

the brakes are wired directly to battery

there's a 10 dollar buss fuse block in the original location. I'm using 4 circuits i believe. 2 more circuits are under the hood i think.

things i still have to wire up: reverse lights (will be off the power ON relay), dome light, stereo, top secret levitation device, soda dispenser, windshield wipers, and windshield nozzle motor thing.

But wiring your car yourself can get rid of ALOT of un-necessary wiring. Just put some thought into it beforehand. I didn't and now i have to run a second set of wires for the speakers.

also you can also integrate some connectors between the dash and the chassis, so you can do the dash wiring with the dash on your workbench. It sure beats reaching around and nutting every one of the gauges in by hand, and cutting to the right length. When you're done with the dash wiring, you can install the gauges and put the dash in whole. That's how I did mine. I needed to remove the heater core and patch holes in the firewall anyways.

Good luck!

[edit]

on the dash, I saved all the sockets that I could save... and bought some more at autozone for the ones that I couldn't save. I wired all those to a single wire to go to my dimmer rheostat, but then I found out it was broken.

So when you pull the original harness, be sure to save the light bulb sockets. It's a good time to test the bulbs too.

there are two different kinds behind the dash. One has a single pigtail and uses the instrument as ground, and the other has two pigtails for a seperate ground. Save the one with the two pigtails for the e-brake wire, since that needs a ground to turn on... and wire the other end to the "on" position.

Be sure to keep in mind that the chassis might be corroded, so clean up grounding surfaces.

uh, that's all i can think of for now, please post specific questions later. :)

I bought a Paniless kit, wasn't the cheapest way but, I did it all myself and it all works! I had no prior experience.

Figureing out all the leads from the combo switch (EVERYTHING WORKS BY THE WAY! :) ) was the hardest part, it took a couple of weekends

Granted my car is not my daily driver YET, but it wasn't too bad and many of the guys that have rewired their cars will agree. You will loose alot of the complexity and redundant wiring if you do this. Plus underneath my dash is now almost completly EMPTY! All those relays and whatever else was under there, no longer needed.
