Guest thegarehanman
So I priced a rebuilt turbocharged motor and a rebuilt man. 5spd. tranny for the z. It was very reasonable at just over $4000 for the whole shebang not to mention a few extras. Anyhow, I'd much rather invest that, whatever I can get out of my well running auto 86n/a, and whatever more money is neccessary into an older z. I'm looking for something that can handle a good bit of power without dropping in a v8 and figured that you can't go wrong with the 7 crank bearing straight 6. I'm thinking that I'd like 240, but I find the appeal of a turboed 280 hard to resist. Has anyone done a turbo conversion on their 240 or 260?. Also, I know that on a z31 you can get close to 300hp with stock injectors. At approx. what hp will the 280zx turbo injectors max out at? I've got a sport bike for transportation so I'm not worried about having this thing sit in the garage during a turbo conversion or what not. I suppose my ideal situation would be a 2 seater 240 with a turboed straight 6. I've always liked the bumperless look. Oh, I just realized that those are two entirely different engines, aren't they? Will a L28 turbo manifold even bolt up to an L24?Well any thought you guys can give are appreciated. Most of this is hypothetical right now, but I'd really like to see something happen with this in the near future.
Dayz
Welcome to hybridz, First thing: use the search function before someone cu your head right off !!! Plenty of good info . Second: Putting a turbo L28 in a 240/260/280z is the easiest swap possible, and getting 300hp isn't impossible at all. All in all you can have the look you want with the power you want, just use the search function. Good Luck !! Dayz
2many280s
Bolt for bolt, the engines are very VERY similar. Easiest way for a turbo 240/260/280z is to find a rusted or wrecked 280zx turbo with a good engine and just swap it all over. It will bolt right in, as a matter of fact, I think it will even bolt right up to the older tranny although the later 5-speed from the zx donor car would be a better choice. Its all been done several times and well documented on this site.
wigenOut-S30
Welcome. This motor you found.. is that out of a 280zx turbo? if so that seems WAY too much money, even if it was recently rebuilt. I have a 77 280Z turbo BONE stock accept 2.5 in free flowing exhaust and boosting at 10 psi. I believe the stock 280zx turbo injectors are 270CC and can handle around 260-280 HP before maxing out. Good luck in your search and hope you find all the info you need.
Guest thegarehanman
No no no . The motor and tranny I was looking at were jdm and completely rebuilt. The motor actually was a bit of a frankenstein. It was a vg33block overboared w/ new internals to make it a 3.5L engine and it had a rebuilt t3/t4 typical to a z31. The tranny was a 5spd turbo tranny which had also been rebuilt. Nonetheless, I really like the 240's body and the prospect of a turboed straight 6. I've been told that the 240 isn't as strong of a frame as the 280, but I really only want 300 rwhp(for now, hehe), and I'm sure that it should be able to handle that. Or it could with some strategicly located stiffening bars. I can't think of a car I like more(asthetically) than a bumperless 240.
evildky
if your gonna ditch the bumpers anyhow, look at the 280 it does not have the indention in the rear quarter for the rear bumper as the 240 does, so you'll have a cleaner line, also the front fog lights are located in the grill so there is less attention to the valance where the lights reside in the 240, and the weight difference is only like 400lbs? and most of that is the bumpers, A/C and injection, your gonna add less wieght to a 280 with the turbo swap than you would to a 240 becuace the 280 already had the heavy injection intake and wiring in it, and if you get a good look at the bare body's you'll see that the 280 was built a bit better, either should take the 300 without any problems as long as you get a solid carand your not a hardcore drag racer, the real factor is whats more available and affordable in your area ? also the 280 is a bit younger and therfore has less years of weather exposure and less likely to be rusted, but every car gets treated different so you never know, also for the money the L28ET is a super cheap swap, I have a $1000 240 with the engine from a wrecked $350 280ZXT
