Guest charlez13
Hey guys, im new to the forum. My little bro just turned 16 and got a '95 z28 camaro...only to wreck it less than a month later. Insurance wont cover it and my dad just bought him another '95 z28 so basically we have a spare camaro in the garage...the frame is tweaked just enough for it to be un-streetable, other than that it is fine. anyway, we want to part out the camaro as best as we can and put the lt1 to good use. We are considering a Z-car swap but i want to get some info and suggestions before we just dive in to this project. We have the tools and space to do this but want some advice from people that have actually done this before. We are purchasing the manual from JTR but i still have some questions... 1) What would be the best Z-car model (old enough where we wouldn't have to worry about emissions laws) to swap the engine into space wise, performance wise, and without having to a ton of custom fabrication? 2) What all will be involved in the swap? Exhaust manifolds? mounts? wiring? 3) Whats a good rear-end differential for putting the added power to the road and not just roasting tires? will the stocker suffice? if not what would be a good car to swap a differential from? 4) Will the LT-1 bolt up to the stock transmition? (we will probably sell the automatic tranny currently on the engine... and we dont want an all out racing transmition, just something that will be able to handle the power and fit...t56 maybe?) any other comments or suggestions are welcome, we need to know what we're about to get ourselves into. BillZ260
Do a search for JTR on Google, it is the company that make a bolt in kit for the SBC and will work with the LT-1. They have a manual that show the general stuff needed to do the conversion. It gives a good overall veiw of what needs to be done. Start reading on this forum, the Chevy Forum will have all the answers to your questions. Good luck and enjoy For any other questions the ADVANCED SEARCH will help you find out anything else you need to know.

DavyZ
Welcome to the forum. Quick answers for questions: 1) 240Z (any year) but if 280Z works in your area, use that instead. 2) That's JTR manual material for sure--read it cover to cover. 3) R200 or "it depends on what you want to do with the car." 4) Heck no. Everything has been covered in this great forum ad infinitum, so you may find and download just about all the info you need. I'm sure you'll find this place invaluable to helping you with your worthy endeavor. Davy
love-my-V8-280Z
I have a 280Z I have been working on, I bought a 95 Z28 out the junk yard for $3000, I have the motor and 6 speed almost ready to go in. I have received a lot of help here and Im willing to help you if you like. Send me you email address and I can send you some pics. Anyway the 95 is the best year because you can reprogram your computer yourself. As for the swap, buy JTR motor mount brackets, u can get the mounts for $15 any parts store. You need to work up your clutch, radiator, drive shaft, exhaust, gauges.... Use the 280Z the rear end can handle 450lbs or better of torque. the 240 can't. Also the stock u-joint are flat down the u-joints, dont buy the spencers or other ujoints, they all have the grease fitting that generates a weak point. There are a lot of things u need to know. Cost, well you will spend $1,000 or more to get it in the car. and if you are like me several thousand on fancying up the Z car. Any way I have read, you will be able to spin the tires doing 90 MPH. No questions I think its going to be scary fast!!!!!!!!!!
