BillZ260
I am fixing to buy a shortblock with solid roller lifters and I want to make sure I know what I am getting into. This is the motor that Storm280ZT is selling. On DD200 I ran his set up with my vortec heads and performer intake and it showed 400 ft/bls and 375 hp at the crank. Way more than I need so I am happy. Back to the lifters, for a daily driver are these solids ok or do I need to invest in a set of hydralic roller. I have confidence that I can set the lash, I just want to know how often I will need to do this and what the pro's con's are with hyd vs solid roller lifters. Should I also invest in a set of roller rockers? Is it worth the extra $300 or can I upgrade to them later. Try to build this on a budget. Brad-ManQ45
Solids should be checked every 7-15K miles depending upon how anal you are and previous history. If you don't wind it out a lot, you can go longer. Some have gone 30k without need for adjustment. Rollers are a lot different story than non- rollers that wear more. If the cam gives you what you want as far as torque/hp where you want it - stick with it, otherwise change it. If you don't spin past 6200 rpm, if you decide to chabge cams, go hydraulic and don't worry about valve lash anymore. Roller Rockers (fulcruns and ends) are nice, but if the present cam works for you, don't bother swapping them out until you have to tear it apart for anither reason... This is all based on squeezing every lasdt penny....
BillZ260
The short block currently has a solid roller. i will be happy with it. I just read the artical in PHR this month on solid rollers and I am now no longer afraid of them. thanks!
dsommer
Bill, My engine is a solid roller, setting lash is easy just as long as you can easily get the rocker covers off. I would recommend setting lash approx every other oil change just to keep it in good tune. Remember when running solid cams you get every thing out of the cam (lift) all the time. Sounds like a street able setup though with 375HP and 400TQ. DD on my engine was like 404HP and I can’t remember the est TQ. That was with Trick Flow heads though. We are having a Z car day at Superior Nissan this weekend in Fayetteville, AR if you want to come check out my car come on over. ds
BillZ260
What day this weekend, what times? I am driving to Dallas friday(what a way to spend a vacation day right?) and I am going to pick up this short block. But hopefully I will be running out of excuses with this motor Saturday I think my wife and I are going to be taking a glass blowing class. I get to see if I can make a shifter knob OR maybe a QUE BALL JK!!! It is pretty cool and I am looking fwd to it. Sunday, guess I should do what you keep tellime me to do and get off my rear and get to work on this car!! Is it just a 2 hour drive? Will think about it. jbeech
I too made (am making) this same decision. Since I don't drive 5000 miles a year on my hybrid, I decided to go solid roller and the Hell with worrying about adjusting the lash. I used to be into hot VWs and adjusting lash on them was no big deal so this will just be more of the same - easier as I don't have to lay on my back to do the job. I'm going with a http://www.crower.com/misc/cam_spec/cam_finder.php?part_num=00422&prn=0 cam for my motor. Pics at http://www.modelsport.com/gto if you are interested. Meanwhile, I missed the article in PHR, which issue? John
BillZ260
Meanwhile, I missed the article in PHR, which issue? It has to be this months or I am assuming, I bought one off the rack last weekend because of that article. Yeah, lash is no biggie. I had a 2.0 OHC Isuzu Trooper. After I rebuilt that motor I checked the lash all the time, guess I thought it was "COOL"
