peej410
hey guys yesterday on my ride home i noticed my shoes delaminating from the heat of my engine and my floors and everything and i started to wonder what i could use to monitor engine bay temperatures.... i remembered a few years ago my ex girlfriends brother buying a temp gauge thingy from radio shack PN:63-1039 and he was talking about how he could tell inside and outside temps so i picked one up and mounted the sensor on the firewall just inback of my distributor. i couldnt believe how high temps got in the engine bay on a cold night at idle in traffic and how low they got on the highway under the same conditions, i also realized that my intermittent bog ive been suffering is a lean bog because it only happened when my engine bay temps got below 80 degrees. on the highway the temps got as low as 55 on a 50 degree nite and at idle in traffic it got upto 123. im going to make some modifications to see if i can get the idle temps lower anyways, thought this was interesting so i thought id let u guys know
Kevin Shasteen
Venting the under hood temp air out is one of the ways in maximizing your engine's efficiencies (output). Now you see why it is even more important to use a K&N type air intake system: otherwise your engine is breathing in hot under hood air-not good. Datsun's 280z hood vents are not that efficient-they are more/less a compromise that worked-they still dont work that great but they are better than nothing. Tim240z
When I am sitting idling, I can see the heat vapor rising out of my vents, so I know that they are working well. I am planning on taping some ribbon on the vents and driving to see what's happening at speed.....
80LS1T
I always thought those hood vents were there to let out "trapped air" under the hood to reduce front end lift at higher speeds. Im sure they also help with letting out head too but I thought the main purpose was for aerodynamics? Guy

SBC_400
I went with some bigger vents then the stock 280 ones, they seem to work well, but I have a new hood and I am having trouble locating another louvering machine, and I don't want to put a solid hod back on.
