LS1 Fuel Economy

Recommended Posts

I think I have finally established a fuel economy range for a stock LS1 in a Z. At Texas Motor Speedway running pretty much full out I ran 118 miles on 12.1 gallons of fuel for an average of 9.8 MPG. On the other end of the spectrum, I had a short highway run where I was able to constant cruise at about 70 MPH with the windows down and AC off. The car ran 60.5 miles on 2.34 gallons of fuel for an average of 25.8 MPG. :-D Kind of brings home the effect the foot can have on fuel economy.

In comparison I'm getting 26-28MPG in my 99C5 Corvette (T56 equipped) when I'm cruising on the highway at 70mph. My car weighs in at 3250# with fuel. That just give you something to throw your numbers against. Only changes to my motor are the Borla XR1 Catback and the GMS Twin Filter cold air kit that replaces the airbox.

Shoot, that's not bad at all. I only got 12 mpg in my 510 with a 4 cylinder with half the HP. Considering it's either full throttle or decelerating, that's about what to expect. At least the hwy mileage is pretty good. Anyway, I don't think a 400HP motor with 26 mph hwy can get much better. :-D

I'm running a pretty strong injected 327 w/ a Holley throttle-body and got 20.3 mpg at my last fill-up (driving as if I deserved a license). This was from one town to another, half-a-dozen stops, a few miles of town, 10 miles of country. I would imagine straight highway mileage to be in the mid 20's or so, though I haven't kept track yet. I have found that tuning the computer made a significant difference; it started in the 12-15 range, making less power and less driveability. I still haven't invoked the "highway mode" in the prom, I'm hoping it will improve the mileage even more.
