Guest bastaad525
This has happened three times, twice last night, and once this morning. All three times during the first few minutes of driving the car, so when the car is still cold. I was making a turn (and this happened during both turning left and right) and I heard a noise while I was turning, very similar to the sound a loose, squealing belt makes but lower in pitch by an octave or two, and this sound seemed to be coming from the REAR of the car. I'm wracking my brain and can't even begin to imagine where a noise like that could possibly be coming from in the back of the car... why only for the first minute two of driving and why only when turning? Anyone have any ideas on this?
wheelman
Sounds llike you may have a problem with the spider gears in the diff. The sound goes away after the diff fluid has lubricated everything. I would drain the diff fluid and look for metal flakes and then act accordingly depending on what you find. Sorry man, you never seem to catch a break with this car. strotter
From the rear? Odd. All that comes to mind could be something in the differential (dry? bad bearing? bad seal?), or something rubbing on a tire, the driveshaft, or one of the halfshafts. Something trapped under the car? (I picked up a piece of tarp one time that got hung just in front of the differential, made a hissing noise I thought was from the intake). Exhaust pipe shifted over, maybe a broken mount, rubbing on a tire? Is the sound *the same* turning right and left? Does it vary with the rate of turn? I'm thinking you're just going to end up jacking it as high as practical and crawling around...
Guest bastaad525
it's such an odd noise to be coming from the diff... more of a rubber rubbing noise like a belt, than anything metallic like that metallic whine or grind or anything. Only when turning, and yeah in either direction sounded the same. It occurs so briefly I couldn't really get a good idea if it was coming from the center rear or one side or whatever... really couldn't get a good idea about anything at all... Having only seen behind the tires a couple times... I find it hard to believe anything could be rubbing on them? Unless like you said it's something stuck in there. If it were the diff, why would it only make the noise while turning? I'd think it's make noise when moving no matter what? Forward, backward, or turning all the moving parts of the diff are... well.. moving, right? I dont know enough about the way the diff works. Checking the diff oil is gonna be a pain... I dont know why it was done this way, but the moustache bar is installed in such a way that it needs to be removed to check or drain the diff oil. The diff might be LOW on oil, because of this... no real way for me to check it, and I do know that it leaks a tad bit (what diff doesn't!). 80LS1T
Heres what I would try.... *Make sure the car is cold like you said *Jack the car up in the rear *Put a jack stand under each rear control arm *Lower car on to jack stands *Then turn one the wheels to simulate the car moving If the noise is still there you should be able to pin point it pretty easy. What kind of diff are you running? Open or LSD of some sort? Guy
Guest bastaad525
I'm gonna start assuming my ears are messed up from being a musician or something... turns out the noise was coming from the front after all... coulda swore it was coming from the back, and it was just what I thought it sounded like... the new alternator belt I had just installed had loosened/stretched a bit... how odd that it only made noise when turning??? anyways... man I feel stupid
80LS1T
Does your car have power steering? If so that "extra" strain on the engine from the p/s pump could cause that. Guy
Phantom
OK - here's the scary part - I have that low groan that is coming from the area of the differential - only when in a very tight, low speed turn. Have a 3.70 R200 LSD
