Miles Posted September 13, 2002 Share Posted September 13, 2002 Can anyone recommend a manufacture and part number for a bottom radiator hose to fit between the SBC water pump and the Griffin bottom outlet? My 19" x 22" Griffin has the bottom outlet tube angled slightly up so it looks like the hose is going to have to make some compound bends to line up with the outlet tube. The unanswered post by Miles is what I found in the search function, I have the 24X19 Griffin with the 1 3/4 inch lower out let and with a long neck SBC waterpump running a belt driven FlexoLite fan. Griffin recomends the universal flex hose that I am not too keen on. I found a 73 Monte Carlo 350 SBC upper hose works on the top. Would a 1971 Nova 350 SBC lower work? jt1 Posted November 20, 2002 Share Posted November 20, 2002 I'm running the 24 x 19 Griffin w/ a SBC with an Edelbrock aluminum water pump w/1 3/4 inlet, JTR position, in a 73 240Z. My Griffin has the odd looking angled lower outlet, 1 3/4" Dia. A friend that runs a NAPA store let me root thru his hoses for about half a day & take several home to try, & bring back what didn't work. I used a NAPA # 8948. It has a crook in the last 6 or so inches that you have to cut off, then it works fine. I have no idea what it fits. It DOES NOT have a "spring" in it to keep the hose from collapsing at high RPM. You need the spring in the lower hose, so I used the one out of the universal flex hose I used to run. If you don't have a spring, you may have to buy another hose to get the spring. I called Napa and was told they could not identify the application for lower radiator hose #8948 ($15.29) I kept the spring from the hose on the donar car. They ordered the hose for me. The molded hoses are a lot better quality than the flex ones anyway; flex hoses are intended to be a stopgap repair. They start cracking pretty soon. I can email a pic of mine if you want it. I was planning to replace the lower hose today and had already done the research and found the info from Brian's site. Then, I just saw this post as I was having my morning coffee before going out to my shop (the building in the background of my sig)! Some time today I will que up the courage to circumsize a $15.29 hose.(Re-edit)The circumsicion was successful. .... and requires a coiled inner spring to keep the hose stiff and prevent collapsing.....maybe a substitute for Viagra,,,Ouch !!!!!! PaulR Posted November 27, 2002 Share Posted November 27, 2002 Well, here's an update: I tried the Napa 7369 hose and didn't like the fit... so I had the local Napa store order the 8948 hose. I just installed it and it was a much better fit. So, the bottom line is use the Napa 8948 lower hose with a Giffin radiator and a SBC in the JTR position.
