SHO engine into a Z?!?!?!?

Hello guys, BRAAP is BACK!!!!

 

Well, I’m working on a couple of project Z’s right now, LS1 power, (this project is on hold) but the other one is a go right now. Goal for this project is just to make a nice smooth zero maintenance quiet daily driver Z that is tad different from the other swaps going right now, not wild, just different. I have at my disposal a nice Taurus SHO engine that I want to install into the engine bay of a 280. Has anyone ran across anyone else converting this east/west V-6 into a north/south config and if so, what is the most common route?

Mopar 440 power in a 280 and now SHO power in yours? Too bad it's not the Yamaha V8, eh? Anyway, I'm shooting to have my Z done next month, so I'll have to come to PDX to play.......on the road course, that is! See you soon!

Rags is right, turn the intake, but you need to build a 3/8 spacer for the throttle body end to clear the timing belt cover. Super engine, my son had 3 SHO's and I parted one out. The engine is very heavy for it's size, and also quite tall. But the 2 stage intake is nice and the valves shims are the same as Yamaha and Kawasaki (900/1000) motorcycles. We had a 94 SHO running 14.7's at 101MPH, not bad for a boat of a car and basicly dead stock, just attention to deatail and claiming all the free horsepower to be had.

I posted this over a year ago. I started and stopped a SHO conversion.

The information on the Healy is great for a source of what you need. As you can see below getting all of the parts together is the real trick.

 

I have just returned the SHO motor to the wrecking yard that I bought if from. After 4 months of waiting, 3 wrong bell housings and no transmission, I have given up on this project. I did receive a full refund on the motor and parts.

What Went Right. 1. When I bought the parts, everything from one source, I gave them a full list of everything I needed, including year and model. I kept a copy of this for my reference. 2. I learned a lot about the engine and wiring harness. The SHO is very tall. To install properly the pan depth needs to be shortened about 1-1/2†at least to get around 3†of ground clearance. To install correctly the firewall need to be notched to clear the water outlet and the rear of the air plentum. This will move the motor back enough so the harmonic balancer will not be sitting directly on top of the steering rack. 3. With the right books and patience the wiring harness is not as bad as it looks. 4. When I confronted them that the transmission is a 1994 T5 shown on my list I received my money back even with my modifications to the wiring harness.

What Went Wrong. 1. I didn’t wait until all of the parts were in one pile. I accepted them in a piecemeal order. The motor one day the drive shaft, bell housing another. 2. I really should have gotten better dimensions of the engine. Take pictures of a motor out of a car from all directions and take them with you and get ever dimension that you might need marked on the photo.

If I had to do it again I would have the wrecking yard initial my list of needed parts. I would have done more research on the dimensions and weight on this motor. I am still planning on some type of conversion for my 260Z convertible but will do more research next time.

This SHO project started out from a complete SHO car, that drove. Shifter cable was broke so the car was bought at a great deal. The Powertrain and complete Powertrain wiring harness have been removed, the rest of the car has been cut up and sold as scrap, (what else is a Ford body good for, LOL). At any rate, I have the entire Powertrain complete with the ECU harness, etc. Now all I need is the rear drive bell housing and manual tranny to bolt up to it and I’m off and running..

trans you need is a rare unit.it is from a 5 speed 3.0v6 aerostar.best wiring book is from ford.it is called a evtm by the technicians.most of the engine harness is separate from the car harness.good luck.i am a ford dealer tech.the only work i saw these motors need is a water pump/timing belt change.do yours out of the car and save your self some time.at least inspect the weep hole on the water pump.
