Guest jwmaxse
I just bought an '88 300zx turbo 5 speed and it has some issues. After driving for 10-15 miles on the interstate the car will sputter just for a second and the rpm's will go down a bit and right back up to where they were before, then after driving a while longer the motor will die completely. It does start back up after sitting for a minute or two and it will run for another few miles sometimes, other times it will sputter out and die again while trying to get back up to speed. I've changed the fuel filter, the spark plug wires look fine, air filter is fine, O2 sensor looks to be new but it's missing the heat protection from around the wires. A few things I did notice were that one of the inlets on the purge canister broke off. It's the one on the rear of the canister that is connected to the intake. The vacuum hose has been plugged to eliminate any vacuum leak. Also, the prong that the wire attaches to on the fuel pressure regulator broke off. What is this thing? Thanks for any suggestions you all can give me, the car drives fine otherwise and only has 117,000 miles on it. I'm looking forward to modding this car and it already has a 3" catback exhaust with a magnaflow muffler, eibach springs, tokico illumina struts, and polyeurothane bushings in the front. Z-Gad
I had an 86 300zx turbo with the exact same symptoms. It was a bad MAF (Mass Air Flow Meter). I replaced it with another unit and the problem was fixed.
Guest jwmaxse
How did you find out it was the MAF? Did the computer throw any codes or anything?
Z-Gad
Nope, didn't throw any codes. I pulled the MAF, visually compared it to one that I knew was good and noted the differences. Primarily, the little "electrode" in the center of the MAF was closed against the center piece of the MAF where in the good one, there was a gap. I replaced the MAF w/ a salvage yard piece and VIOLA ... fixed!!
stagefumer11
also try another ecu, its common over here for them over the years to become faulty, i know cus mine is, and will randomly kill fuel and spark.
Guest jwmaxse
Hey, I finally got my car fixed so I figured I would put an update on here. The car was not getting spark from the coil to the cap all the time. I checked the ecu codes and they put out a code 11, so I got a new distributer with a new crank angle sensor and all is well. Just wanted to let anyone know who might have this problem in the future.
