Jury Rigged Brake Lines

Recommended Posts

Well I was changing out my brake lines with SS lines today when I discovered that the passenger front line has the wrong size flair fitting on it. Somewhere along the line the former owner must have damaged the line and replaced it with a 1/4 flair insted of the 10mm X 1.0mm flair. It was cross threaded into the old flex line and put a halt to fixing it on Sunday because nobody has a 10mm X 1.0mm Flair around here! Well here she sits.

 Yeaaghhhh!!! Dude.. rip those ugly bumpers off there!!! I forgot how much the stock ones stuck out! (I have a roll pan and 240 bumper on mine, just used to that look now..) That sucks about the brake lines. I feel your pain on this one man.. it's a PITA for me to do brake lines in the first place.. I just don't get along with brake fluid! I had my own 'discovery' whilst doing my brakes. I tried to get the bleeder screw out of the drivers side wheel cyl.... SNAP! some thoughtless fool had overtightened and half striped an INCH bleeder in there.. nice. For now, I have a 3/8" self taping screw in there ( I know I know.. but it works for now!) and it's holding... man that reminds me.. I got to get that fixed!

Yes it is ugly. I'll be working on the body after I get the engine in there and running for a while, then it all comes out and I'l purdy it up.

I had a bad bleeder also, and a bad calliper. So far I have replaced both wheel cylinders, both callipers, and the MC. I'm doing the brake lines now, then it's the booster.

What I have leared about brakes is to make sure if your going to have teh system opened up to be sure you can get the parts you need to fix it if you brake the bleeder off.

What works really good is to use one those mini torches(hand held and operates on butane cost is about $20+ fuel) and a hammer. First heat up the area around the bleeder, not the bleeder itself. Then tap on it with the heated area with a hammer and try turning the bleeder at the same time. It works most of the time but if you havent had the bleeder loose in years like most of these cars, sometimes your just S.O.L.! and your going to break it off no matter what.

I dont recommend a regular size torch because it gets the area too hot and I have seen guys explode brake hoses from too much heat in the system which causes the fluid to expand and BOOM!
