Guest Mr. Big Business
OK, this is a dumb question, I know, but which alternator bracket do I need to mount the alternator onto my ZZ4 crate engine? I plan on running a single groove pulley for just the water pump and alt from the crankshaft. (electric fan) If somebody could give me a jegs or summit part number I'd be very grateful. (or even Advance Autoparts, since that's local) Along that line of thought, what alternator should I ask for at the parts store? As you probably know, one can't just walk into a parts store and ask for a one-wire GM alternator. It confuses the pimply-faced kid behind the counter. What year/make/model is best to tell them the alt is for? Thanks! Henry ps - yes, I did search for this before asking.
Guest Luigi
Hey, decide which side of engine you wanna put alt. The pics in JTR book are good idea of clearance issues. Also, if you are gonna run a/c think about where it will go. Figure these out and reply. I'll try to help. I use a street and performance low drivers side with a 10 o'clock adapter. VERY close to the steering knuckle on rack end. Call and get their catalog. It's worth $5.00. Also go by a street rodder magazine. Good ideas. Alan Groove has some nice stuff that is not to expensive. His stuff is mostly flame cut mild steel. It powder coats real well. hope this helps luigi
Mike C
You also need to decide which waterpump you will use. There is the short pump up until 68 (70 in 'vettes and 72 in trucks) the long pump 69 and up,the Corvette short pump from 71-81, the 82 'vette pump, the 84-91 reverse rotation 'vette pump (that also has a different block to face measurement than the other short pumps.) Once you decide on the waterpump, then you can choose your pulleys. Then you can see which mounts are available for your combo. If you use the long pump, there are upper alternator brackets from 69-76 and 77 until serpentine. Either way, I like the one wire Powermaster 100 amp alternator from Summit for about $100. You can use any 10 si alternator (73-83 for the most part.) and adapt it to your car with a pigtail available at parts stores.
Guest Mr. Big Business
Thanks for the replies. the engine came with a long water pump, so that's what I'll be using. I went and browsed throught the pictures in the JTR book, and it looks like I just need the tube/spacer and the "slotted boomerang" shaped flat bracket. I suppose I'll just mount it the way it's shown in the JTR pics, on the upper passenger side.
GAZRNR
I have a GM HO 350 crate motor with the long water pump & tried using the univeral "boomerang" and did not like the way it fit or looked. Then ordered the TD Performace Alt Bracket PN TRD-9317 from Summit-$16.95. Just make sure you use the top hole on the head and it will fit just like you want it to. Also used a dynaflex alt belt #15445 from PEPBOYS and it put the adjustment right in the center of the adjustment slot. For the spacer between the alt body & cylinder head I used the stock spacer off a 1980 malibu that was in the salvage yard. I know you didn't want to hear that but setup fits like a glove. You could buy the universal tube and cut it but why go through the hassel,IMO. Also used the summit billet pulleys too. Nice fit and looks sharp!
