FEnatic
I tried a search but nothing, has anyone tried a true dual setup with the MSA split header and twice pipes all the way back with two mufflers? I saw the pics of the Japanese 240 with the Q45 v-8 and duals, and it looks tough. Most straight sixes sound pretty good with duals, just have to get the right muffler. Thanks
ecp48
There have been several threads on this. However the general consensus is that they are too loud. However, that said, I am planning on doing it using an MSA 6-2-1 header without the collector and an old NOS twice pipe from a defunct dealer, 1 3/4" mandrell bent tubing with long glass packs. The tubes will hook directly to the header with a 2" to 1 3/4" reducer. I plan on adding a crossover shortly after the header in the hope of reducing the harsh resonance/rough sound. Pyro
IMHO I think it is a big mistake to put duals on a 6 cylinder. The sound pluses from two three cylinder banks have sloppy and cloppy sound. Maybe if you also install a balance tube it might sound fair. In a single exhaust system, some of the sound pulses cancel each other out thus producing a smoother, cleaner, consistant note. Plus datsuns don't handle two pipes going down the center and around the diff and tank very well. It takes 8 cylinders or more to make a good sounding exhaust with duals. (Except in a V10 dodge viper which always sounds like something is wrong)

blueovalz
I've heard (from the pipe itself) the difference between the single and dual header, and yes, the single "sounds" much better. As for the BMW, don't both tubes eventually end up going to the same muffler in the end (at least on my 325i they do).
ecp48
Choppy or not, during the Z's racing "hay day" the majority ran twice pipes. Check out the photos and you will see two pipes exiting dead center in the rear panel. The Bimmers run the twice pipes on race cars today. Drax240z
Well can't remember E30 325i exhaust, but I know the E30 323i euro model had 2, 3 cylinder manifolds off the engine, and twice pipes all the way back. The only place they met was a dual in, dual out resonator in the tranny tunnel. Great sound.

I can only speak to the E36 chassis and yes they have dual pipes but they also have a common cat and a common muffler, so they are not a true dual exhaust. Mark Belrose's original BRE built 240Z has the original straight through dual exhaust and its very load and sounds like an old Jag. If you listen to it as it goes by on the track you wouldn't guess it to be a Z.
