dapiper
Thought it was the gasket blown to jacket, but heart sunk when gasket intact, had to be head or cyl wall. There is a fine crack running radially out from intake valve boss across quench ledge of chamber about half way to edge. Have a lot of chamber work on this head and hate to loose it. Anyone tried welding head?
johnc
Yes, my head had a similar problem (cause was detonation) and its was welded up and remachined. Worked out well, but it cost a few hundred dollars to get it done right. The head has to be completely stripped (including valve seats), the crack "V'd", the head pe-heated to 400F, welded while maintaining a 400F interpass temperature, and air cooled. After, the combustion chamber needs to be machined and the head surfaced.
