Ferd/289
How can I check to see if the interior of the tank is rusty and needs work. Car has been sitting in a garage and I drained the tank years ago. I heard of a process that corrects a rusty interior on a fuel tank. Anyone know what that is? Guest Magnum Rockwilder
You can remove it and "boil" it with muriatic acid and then use a neutralizer afterwards. You can get all the stuff needed at a swimming pool supply store. You can also use electrolysis if you can find a large enough tub to submerge it in. Guest DiZeased_240
Try this kit from Eastwood. I've heard it works well. No experience with it though. http://www.eastwood.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=382&itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&keyword=gas+tank
Guest 240zJake
I just took pea gravel and shook it in the tank untill all the rust rubbed off then used a gas tank sealer, I only had moderate to light rust though
Guest tony78_280z
I took it to a radiator shop and boiled it out (3 times) then used the POR15 gas tank resto kit. Inside it is shiney silver & sealed. I then undercoated the outside of the tank before reinstalling it. A bit of work, but it is worth it. datsunlover
As for 'seeing how bad it is' it's only two bolts holding the straps, and two rubber lines/filler neck.. I had mine off the car in about 45 mins, not knowing what I was doing! I had some bad scale.rust in there, so I sloshed a bunch of varsol around, and left it sitting for a few days. I did this 3-4 times, and it cleaned up good. Didn't have a problem all summer with cloged filters or poor running, so I guess it's ok. Synlubes
I have used this product (see link) in my tank regularly to keep rust from being a problem. It comes in a spary can as well as a 1/2 gallon bottle. http://www.amsoil.com/products/amp.html My car is parked more than it is driven. I had problems with rust in the tank many years ago. Started using the product then with very good results. Never even droped the tank, although I did change a few fuel filters until rust problem cleared up. I even use this to start my car after it has set for long periods of time and the fuel evaporates from my weber carbs. This stuff burns so clean, I can literally run my car off this stuff. It` good stuff!
