Anybody know anything about the VQ30DET?

I too am just about to put a VQ30DET into my Z, except my Z is a Z32 NA 2 seater.

The Z currently weighs about 1330kg, but I have taken too much weight out of the back of the car and now it handles like crap - the VQ30 being an aluminium block will help me take weight out of the front of the car to restore the Z's weight ballance, and I hope to take some extra components out of the front during the changeover (emission piping - not required in my country). All total, I hope to have the engine capable of 500hp with a 50-70 nitrous antilag system, while getting the weight of the Z down to under 1250kg. I chose the VQ over a VH, VK and RB engine, because the others fill up the engine bay too much - no good for me if I need to fix something trivial at the dragstrip. I also chose the VQ over the VG because of the complexities of the VG - I had read that they have learnt from the past developments of the VG and have "simplified" the layout of the VQ.

As for people breaking the VQ at about 400hp, I'll let you know ;)

Hi ZFetsh,

Your project sounds great, I hope that you can also post some photos as you go.

Do you have the engine yet?

Here is the latest photo of my project.

The shop that I work at has built quite a few twin turbocharged vq35de motors with some being internally built, and some stock. The motors are strong, but I think the Vg's, although heavier, are stronger and more reliable for the abuse people put the motors through.

The VG is one of the strongest engines Nissan has produced. It currently holds most of the power, 1/4 mile, and top speed records of Nissan engines. I think the VH45DE/VK45DE might be a better engine but not many have been modified a whole lot yet... I can tell you that with a basic turbo, s/c, or nitrous setup there has been a few pushing around 600 hp with no trouble at all on the stock internals. With a good buildup the VH45's could probably handle a **** load of power. Forged crank and rods stock with a crank girdle and 6 bolt mains makes for a damn strong engine.

The VQ30DE(T) in stock form is quite a bit stronger than the VQ35DE from what most have seen so far. A guy with a VQ30DE Maxima turbocharged it and pushed more than 500 whp on the stock internals (10:1 compression ratio). The VQ30DET has lower compression pistons so whether or not it'll handle the same amount of power, I have no idea. I do know its all in the tuning though. The guy with the Maxima went through a few engines before perfecting it to its final state.

The VQ35DE is said to not handle as much power because Nissan wanted to have very lightweight internals and such basically to make it more efficient. Basically the rods don't handle a whole lot of power. Upgrade the internals a bit and they should be pretty powerful.

i agree with you cookson. Vg's are beaten up on and proven. the vh's are beasts in there own ways, and I think I'd stay away from the vq35de from a performance/ reliability perspective(forced induction).

But then again, a vq35de n/a in an s30 chassis with velocity stacks, cams, and all the boltons would be cool. But I like F.I.

i'm sure the VQ35 would be a pretty sweet engine with some upgrades. some stronger rods and lower compression pistons would make for a very torquey engine. what's nice is its a very light weight and has a bit more displacement. it still would never be able to handle the power the VG could but it would handle enough for some good fun.

yeah, i believe the VQ30DE is nearly 100 lbs lighter than the VG30E. i believe someone on here said the VQ30DE is actually lighter than a 13b rotary. i'd have to search for it to find out for sure but i'm almost positive that's what they said. the VQ is definitely a very light weight engine.
