Guest Magnum Rockwilder
It depends on what kind of shape the engine is in. I've bought whole cars with 350's for that cheap and driven them home. My local junk yard sells short blocks for $100 and whole engine with all accessories for $150. LT1's cost more, but there's no real power benefit. If it's in need of a rebuild and is basically just good for a crank, rods, and block, I don't think it's a good deal... especially if you haven't checked the bore size to see if it has another overbore left in it. Carbs are cheaper and easier than EFI and make as much power. Regular old Chevy 350's are also a lot cheaper to build than an LT1, so... Tim240z
That intake won't fit on the new gen LT1 heads, and regular heads won't work with the LT1 block. Get a complete engine with harness and PCM...piecing it together will end up costing more and will be a PITA.....
Guest 83supaZ
so i have to get a special lt1 intake from edelbrock/weiand etc.. and i have to have lt1 heads? or will vortec heads work? what is the difference between lt1 block and interchangeable year small blocks? and are there any aftermarket intakes for the lt1 heads? or vortec heads if they fit an lt1
Tim240z
Only LT1 heads will fit on LT1 blocks.....
80LS1T
There is no aftermarket intake for the LT1 because stock one is pretty darn good! The reason LT1 heads are specific to the LT1 is because the LT1 is a reverse cooled engine......so the coolant goes threw the heads first then teh block. So this enables it to run higher compression with out detonation. Carbs are cheaper and easier than EFI and make as much power. I think thats in the eye of the beholder....personally EFI is much easier to me just because Im much younger than most of the guys on here and I didnt grow up with Carbs so I dont know much about them. EFI for me is much easier to diagnose and fix. Guy
Owen
I agree, EFI is easier for me too. I've never even owned a carbed vehicle (except the Z which was only driven home from where I bought it). Add up the stuff like Tim said and you'll see it really adds up...hey, there's a complete EFI'd motor with trans and programmable EFI setup in the Complete Engine classifieds! What a steal!!!
