The radiator core is 5 inches thick, I just could not pass this one up. You just don't see ones like this around. There are some issues with thick units as you need strong fans to draw in the air, but for a cooling platform it will work great for me.:-D

Personally I think its over kill. I have a Griffin 26"x19" 2 core radiator in my 280ZX with my LT1 SBC and its cools it just fine. I have never ever had the temp go over 210*. I have a CSI electric water pump, Taurus 1 speed fan(I thought I was buying a 2 speed at the time but the 1 speed has worked without issues so Im not switching to a 2 speed)I think you should sell it for some BIG $$$ and buy a 2 or 3 core radiator and a Taurus 2 speed fan. This set up is a proven winner and is fairly inexpensive.

 

Just out of curiousity how much was that radiator and what was its original intended use before you got it........big block?

The radiator was designed for Nascar super speedway racing. I ended up paying $220.00 so it was hard to pass up. I am just an overkill guy when it comes to cooling systems, engine coolant, oil, air etc. I admit I could get by with something else just fine but for now I will keep this radiator around. Who knows it might be too thick to fit.

You May Run Into More Cooling Problems Than You Fix With That..... You Have To Remember More Cores Means More Restriction And More Heat When There Is No Air Flow..... Fans Are Just Going To Struggle To Keep That Cool. You'll Find Yourself Flooring It On The Freeway To Keep It Cool.

Yes!

 

There are issues with air flow with this type of radiator and I will consider the restriction factor as you stated. I am a fan freak, however if it looks like a problem I will surely not use it. I am not reinventing the wheel and plain to convert a 240Z/LS1/Auto trans mostly as others have done. I have spent countless hours screwing with designs finding out most often its best to go with proven system designs. I just like the design phase involved in some projects. John, G.M. It's built for racing, you'll be just fine over 150MPH. Don't worry about it. Sorry I couldn't resist.

 

There may be mothing wrong with it, although it goes against the teachings of the JTR manual (our bible). With a 5 row radiator, you are basically saying that lieing, cheating, and stealing are okay in moderation. In otherwords throw three out of 10 of those commandments away.

 

You should get a long Waterpump from edlebrock and run a clutch fan with that bad boy.

 

Truely though, most of us are here to learn, you may have on your hands the best dang way to cool the Datsun ever invented. It just has not been tested yet. These nay-sayers are objecting to "outside the box" thinking. I for one am very interested on how it performes.

 

If too much is bad, way too much might be better, we do not have all the answers.

I agree, just be brave and update this post on how it performs so we all learn. Update honestly though, even if it backfires in your face. (No pun intended, I don't see how a radiator can cause a motor to backfire)

 

I run the stock Z Radiator with my v8 and it stays cool. SO I'm sure this is overkill. But overkill can be fun. What would Tim the Toolman Taylor do? *grunt grunt*

I think as you progress along in your quest to swap an GM engine into a Japanese car you will learn things and have questions about things that you *thought* you knew (and probably did concerning the type of cars you worked on). With that being said...

 

Have you measured it to make sure it will fit between the frame rails on a Z?

John, I hope you are taking this constructive critizism in a good nature. I did not intend to turn this into a "yeah it will work.......no it wont work" thread. All I was trying to do is say "hey that radiator might be a bit much" thats all.

 

I know you are a new member so please dont think we are bashing your idea. We are just speaking from experience thats all.

 

If you do indeed run it in your car please post up the results of how it cools! :-)

The points made concerning this radiator being maybe to thick were valid. I just like most people will spin my story to fit my ideas but you guys who have cars up and running make valid points. I am cool with the forum, being a dealership tech you often see differences of opinion like or not. I think constructive dialog is something we all need. Having said that F88K off!! Just kidding its cool Ha Ha Ha. John

I hope it fits I did see the radiators offered by the conversion sites and basically the same size, except its 5 inches think. I look forward to interacting with an early 70s car but surely will need help along the way. I know the electronics involved with the LS1 and grew up with Datsun. Having said that I know I will need help from all of you. I have to do this in a one car garage with no outside space. Its musical chairs here.
