Koni 8610-1149 Discontinued

Bound to happen. We've been lucky to have a reasonably priced race shock available to Z racers for a long time.

 

Koni's replacement for the 8610-1149 is the 8610-1437RACE. It will physically fit in the Z strut tubes although the body is about .10" taller, the max length (at full rebound) is longer by .57" and the stroke is increased by .39". None of these changes are show stoppers and the increased stroke is a good thing. How much a strut is shorted for these shocks will be different then for the 1149s.

 

But, the big question is valving... We're tryning to get a shock dyno graph and, unfortunately, the lastest Koni Motorsports catalog omits it.

OK, here's the word from Erik Messley regarding the valving on Koni 8610-1437RACE:

 

So this is the scoop. The new replacement shocks to the 1149's are not valved the same. They have less compression valving and more rebound. At the softest rebound setting, it is roughly the same as what the 1149 was at 50% off of full hard. For softer spring rates, this will not be a good thing. For a heavier car, probably not a bad thing. The compression settings are roughly 1/2 of the valving of the older 1149's. This is not a good thing as I traditionally increased the compression valving of the 1149's when custom valving them for better handling on the Z's. Of course, they can be re-valved but the costs go up.

 

Probably the best alternative would be to go with the double adjustable Koni's that would allow the compression settings to be altered prior to installation into the strut housing. As they are adjusted from the bottoms, and the ball-joint is in the way on the fronts, it would be the way it is without some pretty creative engineering to somehow making the adjuster remotely accessible. The doubles also have the increased rebound damping like the replacements for the 1149's do, but at least you can get the compression in the same range and would ultimately end up with a slightly firmer car, though not as compliant on bumpier tracks.
