Guest Anonymous
For all those with dangerously large engines in their 74 and later Z's, hear this. I heard of A guy who will mod a Z that requires smog into a race car. Then he will buy a wrecked 240z and then swap the plates, dash, emblems over. Since the 240z is smog exempt, the DMV thinks you drive a 240, and you can file a P.N.O. for the later model Z . Hey presto, your car does not need to ever enter a smog shop, and you can cut the real 240 into 3 pieces and then it leagally does not exsist. Just playing devil's advocate here. Guest Anonymous
Man... I don't know about that... Unless you know the guy personally. The whole thing seems kind of fishy to me. Just as a question, how would the guy make the car into a race car and how much would all of this cost.
johnc
All its takes is a California Highway Patrol officer to look at the firewall near the master cylinder and your friend and his customer goes to jail while the cops investigate a possible stolen vehicle. The CHP knows where to look on every vehicle for the permanent ID number and its how they catch a lot of chop shops.
Tony240ZT
Permanent, eh? Ever watch the original "Gone in 60 seconds", you know the one from back in the 70's. Pretty cheap movie, but same idea where they stole a pristene vehicle of one type, then went to a car auction for really beat up cars and bought a car of the same type for like $300, then swapped the "permanent" id's over from the $300 car to the perfect condition stolen car, and crushed the junker. In the movie they even take out the windshield to get to that ever so tough to reach id tag on the dash board. Anyways, nothing I'd ever consider doing, but I wouldn't say there's no chance you'd get away with it. Still risky though, no doubt.
jaime240z
Sounds like it just might be easier to START your project with a smog-exempt Z?
Tony240ZT
Hehe, no kidding, expecially since Z cars are so cheap to begin with. That's part of why we like them, right?
johnc
Don't rely on movies for information about committing a crime. Every vehicle has its ID number engraved onto the body in at least one place. Newer vehicles have the ID numbers engraved in multiple places. On the 240Z its on the firewall near the master cylinder. You can swap ID plates around all you want, but the sharp cops know where to look for the "real" ID.
Guest Anonymous
The key to this to be done legally is under the respective state's "vehicle re-construction statutes" which allows two or more vehicles to be combined into one.
