blairjj Posted May 18, 2005 Share Posted May 18, 2005 I recently purchased an 83 ZXT basket case for the drivetrain for my 71 240z. When I pulled the transmission drain plug to drain the ATF I instead got heavyweight gear oil out. I've read the Haynes and BW manuals and they are very specific about NOT using gear oil. So... much question now is what is the best way to get all of the gear oil out of all of the passages in the T5? Am I looking at a complete rebuild here? Thanks in advance. ezzzzzzz Posted May 18, 2005 Share Posted May 18, 2005 If I were you I'd forget the ATF and run over to my local Chyrsler or Chevy dealer. Once there, pick up as many quarts as needed of the Castrol synthetic used in the NV4500 5-speed gearboxes found in the one-ton trucks. This stuff is awesome although quite expensive (around $20 a quart). You won't need to worry about opening up your tranny because what little gear lube remains will blend with the Castrol product.
